[Bug 227062] New: My machine suddenly freezes
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227062 Summary: My machine suddenly freezes Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: jarl@yaeda.org QAContact: qa@suse.de I have a Dell XPS M170 installed with OpenSUSE, and have had SuSE 10.x also, but just installed 10.2. The power management does not work at all. Trying to press the powerbutton does nothing, requesting sleep from the K menu starts the process but returns to X after having written that its trying to enter into sleep. Then nothing works and pressing and holding the power button is the only way out. The powermanagement worked just fine in version 10.1 and 10 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

More info can be found on http://en.opensuse.org/S2ram and http://en.opensuse.org/Pm-utils The powerbutton not working is most probably a kpowersave issue and has nothing to do with the suspend problem. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227062 ------- Comment #4 from jarl@yaeda.org 2006-12-18 22:29 MST ------- If this was a KPowersave problem then Selecting Leave->Suspend to ram would work right? But it does'nt. It just sais Preparing to suspend and then returns to X. Sometimes the machine just stops working. That is freexing just after entering X. If I start with ACPI=off, I never have any problem with the machine freezing. The output was: Machine is unknown. This machine can be identified by: sys_vendor = "Dell Inc." sys_product = "Inspiron XPS Gen2 " sys_version = "" bios_version = "A05" See http://en.opensuse.org/S2ram for details. If you report a problem, please include the complete output above. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227062 ------- Comment #5 from jarl@yaeda.org 2006-12-19 00:36 MST ------- I now found that starting the machine with ACPI worked fine until I did a /etc/init.d/smbfs start then the machine froze. I then did a restart with acpi=off and started smbfs again. No problem. In another bug report I reported mysterious behavioure with various net applciations like MySQL and IMAP being able to connect to certain host but not to others while running 10.2. Worked fine on 10.1 though. Could this be related? That when the network driver in some way conflicts with ofher hardware thereby producing these mystic results? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

You mixed up different bugs in one report (the powerbutton issue has probably nothing to do with the suspend issue). Now you are mixing up the answers.
The output was: Machine is unknown. This machine can be identified by: sys_vendor = "Dell Inc." sys_product = "Inspiron XPS Gen2 " sys_version = "" bios_version = "A05" See http://en.opensuse.org/S2ram for details.
The last line is the important info. Look also at http://en.opensuse.org/Pm-utils Now the smbfs issue seems to be again a different bug, so that i'd rather not mix it up here. I'd say "smb and ACPI do not work together" is the real bug here and so i'll assign it back to the bug dispatchers who will find who is responsible for smbfs :-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227062 ------- Comment #7 from jarl@yaeda.org 2006-12-19 02:09 MST ------- I can understand how all this seem to be different bugs. But the fact that disabling powersaved enables the smbfs makes these related. The original bug report was, that the machine suddenly froze. The causing reason has now been found, namelly that smbfs in some way causes the powersaved freeze the machine. Hope you understand. At least how I see these two related. I allso appreciante the difference between smbfs and the powersave but non the less, everything works until loading smbfs. I would guess saying that the problem is smbfs would also be considered as the problem being powersaved from the smbfs point of view :-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
