[Bug 397332] New: NetworkManager-kde does not represent connection correctly & doesn' t show an output of iwlist [interface] scanning
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=397332 Summary: NetworkManager-kde does not represent connection correctly & doesn't show an output of iwlist [interface] scanning Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: RC 1 Platform: Other OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE3 AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: ben.kevan@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Beta-Customer Much props for getting the 3 icons to fit into one (using NetworkManager-kde from KDE BuildService) however the NetworkManager icon does not correctly represent the current connection state as it did in previous versions of NetworkManager. Please see version below: rpm -qa | grep Network | grep kde NetworkManager-kde-0.7r815970-2.1 This is disapointing to me and seems like a move backwards as many people use that to see what connection method they are using. Another thing in the previous versions of NetworkManager you could also veiw Wireless Networks that were being broadcasts (must like the output of iwlist [interface] scanning) however that is no longer the case, and you can only see the one you are connected do (that I configured in YaST Network Devices). I would have added this an enhancement but I feel they are actually functionally cripling and hope that even if they don't make it for the initial release of 11.0 that they are added as a functional update through the update repository (instead of just "security updates"). If a newer version is being prepared for factory repo, then please feel free to close with fixed and note that it's about to be released to factory and please note when, so I can check and verify that there are no reprocussions. Thanks for all the great work. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Ben, what do you mean exactly with 'not correctly'? Will, I guess this is the issue you've told me yesterday.

Did you ever visit a place with more then 20 broadcasting Networks in range? Therefore we decided to only show known networks which are in range. If you have multiple wireless connections defined every connection which is in range will be shown. If not that's a bug. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Ben, what do you mean exactly with 'not correctly'?
When connected to ethernet (eth0 on my machine) it should show the ethernet icon When connected to wireless (wlan0 on my machine) it should show a wireless connection with signal strength When not connected then it can show the green little globe (although something more "Network" centric would be a good idea).

No, but I do often visit places with wireless broadcasts that I don't know the essid etc. It should show up in the list under NetworkManager, but it doesn't. Only networks I define will show up, but how can I define something I don't know about? So this requires a sudo /usr/sbin/iwlist wlan0 scanning (which most people wouldn't know to do).

Yes, but how are you supposed to automagiclly know these wireless connections in new places etc? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

NetworkManager tries to maintain a connection for every device in the system in parallel. Therefore it might happen that you have a wireless and a wired connection at the same time. The default route should be on the wired device. In which situation did KNM show the wrong icon?

Creating a new connection should show the list of available networks. They simply do not show up in the context menu anymore.
So this requires a sudo /usr/sbin/iwlist wlan0 scanning (which most people wouldn't know to do).
Agreed. The user should never have to run iwlist. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I have only tested wireless. I will test wired in about 1 Hr 30 Minutes when I get to work. While connected to Wireless I am getting the Green Globe

So an extra step was added to making a connection? What was wrong with listing them all and just clicking on the one you wanted (which in turn created the new connection for you if open, or asked for the required encryption protocol / key). That was a very straight forward approach that most users are not only used to, but what makes the most sense in terms of usability. No not yet, we need to do an online update here.
Ok, I confirmed that to be one of the issues with incorrect reporting of connection due to lack of communication with yast network setup (which I did during the installation for testing). I've took all configuration out of YaST (whick again were put in during installation) and configured using NetworkManager and now correct icon shows. Now i guess my last question is why not just list all avaliable networks and clicking on the connection someone wants, it then launches the new connection wizard instead of having to go new connection, then chosing what connection you want? Makes an extra step just to list avaliable wifi's. Thanks. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Correct, but if more then 20 access points were in range the context menu outperformed the screen :) Maybe an option to enable the show-every-access-point-in-the-context-menu-mode would be nice to have. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
