[Bug 219948] New: screen is displayed in different possitions during boot and X-sessions.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=219948 Summary: screen is displayed in different possitions during boot and X-sessions. Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Beta 2 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: sndirsch@novell.com ReportedBy: sven.burmeister@gmx.net QAContact: sndirsch@novell.com I have a NVidia GeForce 4 graphics card and a fresh install of beta2. While booting the screen is right where it should be, however if KDE comes up, the picture is a centimeter too far to the right. If I use sax2 to move the picture, it cannot be centered, i.e. moving it two times to the left is too much, moving it one time is too little. So I use the display's "Auto" functionality that centers the picture. However, if I do so, on booting the picture is too far too the left. Either way, I cannot get the picture to be centered in both situations anf have to choose, which might not be a major bug, but it looks ugly and mediates a broken setup. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

This is a typical behaviour and for monitors not older than 15 years, which can remember more than one mode no problem at all. I propose to update your monitor. Seriously. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=219948 ------- Comment #3 from mhopf@novell.com 2006-11-10 10:14 MST ------- In some cases you might end up having exactly the same timings in the modes (e.g. 1024x768@60Hz), so it's undistinguishable for the monitor, but the other timing values (e.g. pixel start) are different. In that very case your monitor wouldn't be able to distinguish these two modes. As the boot config comes from the BIOS it cannot be fixed. You can force your monitor into a different mode by using a slightly less refresh rate (e.g. 72 instead of 75Hz). If that doesn't help, your monitor is too old, just as Stefan mentioned. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=219948 ------- Comment #4 from sven.burmeister@gmx.net 2006-11-10 10:35 MST ------- If you would have had a look at the xorg.conf before replaying, you would have noticed that this is not an old monitor. It is a fairly new 19" LCD. I use the binary nvidia-driver on 10.1 and in that environment there are no problems. I'll try to install the binary-driver with 10.2 beta2 and if it works it is not the monitor's fault, but some bug that can be fixed and hence I will reopen in that case. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

No, it is not a bug. Just an oddity, maybe an annoyance. I think I clearly explained why this is something that can easily happen. The nv driver apparently creates a mode line that is perfectly valid but different from the one used by the bios. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=219948 ------- Comment #6 from sven.burmeister@gmx.net 2006-11-10 11:21 MST ------- Well, it does not happen with the binary-driver so there seems to be room for improvement, even if it is not a bug. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=219948 ------- Comment #7 from mhopf@novell.com 2006-11-10 11:41 MST ------- Again, both modes are perfectly valid though different. That the NVIDIA binary only driver selects the same mode as the BIOS is nothing more than pure luck (well, and a bit of standardization ;). But that's the good thing about standards - there are so many of them... (e.g. CVT vs. GTF - both describe modeline timing standards - and are different) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=219948 ------- Comment #8 from sven.burmeister@gmx.net 2006-12-16 05:17 MST ------- It seems that my monitor is not the only one that has issues with the valid but not perfectly working modeline by the nv-driver. If this is the case for most (all) monitors, the modeline should be changed to the other type, which is not only valid, but working with less issues. If one can avoid annoyances, one should do it, unless one wants to enforce that people use the binary driver. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=219948 ------- Comment #9 from hadern61-novell@yahoo.de 2007-03-25 06:02 MST ------- I have a NVidia GeForce 2 graphics card (M/MX 400; ELSA GLadiac MX) and a fresh installation of openSuse Linux 10.2. My Monitor is a new WL-19A 19" TFT. My screen was also displaced 2 cm to the right like discribed in other comments. I followed the instructions in http://www.suse.de/~sndirsch/nvidia-installer-HOWTO.html It all works poperly. YaST choosed automatically the matching driver version so that I couldn't select any wrong. Due to having startet "sax2 -r", my monitor went dark for 2 times and after that my system seems ro be crashed. No mouse cursor to see and no visible reactions on keyboard inputs. After rebooting my system using the reset button all works properly again and the screen wasn't displaced anymore - success. Thanks to Sven Burmeister for his individual support. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
