[Bug 576970] New: slow network connection with Intel 82578DM ethernet card (e1000e module)
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=576970 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=576970#c0 Summary: slow network connection with Intel 82578DM ethernet card (e1000e module) Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: jens.grabinger@lse.eei.uni-erlangen.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; de; rv:1.9.2.0) Gecko/20100115 SUSE/3.6.0-1.2 Firefox/3.6 I am using an onboard ethernet card with Intel 82578DM chipset. The network link is up, but only at 10 Mbps, not at 100 Mbps as supported by the network switch. Here is the relevant output of dmesg: Feb 3 19:46:01 lse80 ifup: eth0 device: Intel Corporation 82578DM Gigabit Network Connection (rev 05) Feb 3 19:46:01 lse80 kernel: [ 11.601827] e1000e 0000:00:19.0: irq 31 for MSI/MSI-X Feb 3 19:46:01 lse80 kernel: [ 11.652583] e1000e 0000:00:19.0: irq 31 for MSI/MSI-X Feb 3 19:46:01 lse80 kernel: [ 11.653201] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready Feb 3 19:46:01 lse80 ifup: eth0 Feb 3 19:46:01 lse80 ifup: IP address: 131.188.140.80/24 Feb 3 19:46:01 lse80 ifup: [...] Feb 3 19:46:03 lse80 kernel: [ 13.467215] e1000e: eth0 NIC Link is Up 10 Mbps Full Duplex, Flow Control: None Feb 3 19:46:03 lse80 kernel: [ 13.467221] 0000:00:19.0: eth0: 10/100 speed: disabling TSO Feb 3 19:46:03 lse80 kernel: [ 13.469035] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): eth0: link becomes ready I tried to force the e1000e module to use 100 Mbps using ethtool. But I couldn't get the link up with that connection speed. There seems to be an upstream patch addressing that problem: http://lists.openwall.net/netdev/2010/01/22/61 Will this patch make it into the next kernel update of openSUSE 11.2? Or is there a workaround? The hard disk indicator shows no activity, but the indicators for caps lock and scroll lock are switched on.
How can I provide further info on this error?
Please test these new RPMS, I was using a build environment with a broken compiler before, sorry: http://beta.suse.com/private/bphilips/576970 -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Jozef, Jens- Please test the Kernel in Comment #11 and provide information requested in Comment #10. Thanks.
I have installed the kernel that you provided. It starts booting, but then hangs at a very early stage, displaying this message: Loading drivers, configuring devices: [ 5.855483] e1000e 0000:00:19.0: pci_enable_pcie_error_reporting failed 0xfffffffb The strange thing about this is that the production kernel of 11.2 also displays this message, but then continues normally. So I can provide the register dump only for the production kernel of 11.2. Output of ethregs is attached. I have put the ethregs command into /etc/init.d/boot.local, but I am not sure if this is what Bruce meant by "before the driver loads". It is executed before the interface is brought up, but probably not before the module is loaded. My system is a Fujitsu Esprimo P9900 with Phoenix BIOS version "6.00 R1.03.2912.A1". -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Could you try with openSUSE 11.3?
No, sorry. This computer is a production system and works fine with the updated e1000e module. So I won't update it to 11.3. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
