OK. Sorted!

After a lot of faffing around, copying files hither and yon, installing 13.1
etc., I found it was something I should have tried before, namely renaming
~/.config/libreoffice. I then restarted LO and the problem had gone. 

When the LibreOffice version worked and not openSUSE's, then yours worked, then
mine worked on another machine, then it worked for another user on this
machine, eventually the penny dropped.

I don't know yet which part of the configuration was to blame - and probably
never will - but at least it now works.

Thanks for your help and sorry for bothering you. This bug can now be closed
though I'm not sure about all the duplicates.
