as discussed in bug 1007438 the initial update notification shouldn't be delayed 24hours after installation. There will be important bug fixes available right on first login that need to be installed, e.g. for kernel and browser. So the update applet should check for updates already after a few minutes. Also, the first update is likely for the package management stack, the user is requested to log out and in again. The update applet should also check for updates again in a timely manner in that case.
