I have seen similar behaviour to your newer setup on openSUSE Leap 42.2 Beta1
with the hardware details given in bug 996543#c1

I tried to attach a bluetooth headphone and a Nexus 7 (2012) tablet
but both disconnected directly after pairing.

I used blueberry as a GUI but also watched the events with bluetoothctl
