You're plugging to the headset jack of the laptop, and not to the docking
station port or such?

In anyway, this sounds more like a PA issue, not the driver issue, as manual
configuration works.

At most, there might be a missing jack notification.  Run "/usr/sbin/alsactl
monitor" and see whether you get the events when plugging your headset.
