Tried the xf86-video-intel from the main repository without nomodeset, which gives the same behaviour. Changing brightness to 4687 gives me a bright screen, 0 and 7812 gives black. I can make a root cron job at boot to set brightness as a workaround, although keeping nomodeset is also workable for me.
