This should be fixed meanwhile. phonon-backend-vlc has stricter dependencies and conflicts with newer vlc versions to prevent crashes or broken functionality, and Packman does provide phonon-backend-vlc (built against their vlc packages). The main problem is that while libvlccore7 and libvlccore8 are installable in parallel, the plugins are not. So libvlccore7 will use the plugins of the newer version which does not work, and in this case even causes a crash as it loads the Qt5 GUI plugin into a Qt4 application. The stricter dependencies of phonon-backend-vlc should prevent that though. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 968905 ***
