After the release of 15.0 I downloaded the full dvd image and performed an upgrade. The upgrade process seemed to go smoothly and the system would boot to the graphical login screen. After logging in and a short, rather random period of time (say 0-20 seconds) the screen would go gray with some rubbish on it and the system would not respond to any keys, including Ctrl-Alt-F1 and a shutdown hotkey I defined. Rarely, say in one out of ten attempts, the desktop environment would work normally. When I went to the virtual console before the halt, it would also work normally. Some specific info: AMD GPU graphics card - Radeon RX 460 4K monitor with large fonts enabled After looking through some fora I did: zypper ref zypper up zypper rm -u plymouth mkinitrd This completed with no errors and the problem seems to be gone. I suspect it was the mkinitrd command that did the trick, but I cannot be sure. Expected behaviour: The user should not have to issue the mkinitrd command. It should be done by the upgrade installer. My situation seems very similar to https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1077848 which is a duplicate of https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1066682 However, I am filing this as a new bug, because there is a difference: I did have an episode of installing and removing the Amdgpu pro driver, but that was apparently cleanly uninstalled. No conf files left from that driver in /etc/dracut.conf.d/ and no errors when running mkinitrd. (The repo for that driver was also removed before the upgrade).
