Explained: Boot from a scsi disk

Hi, this is a small howto for booting from a scsi disk in a system where scsi and ide disks are install. It's not that easy :-) I might setup a little Autoyast page some day, collecting all those kind of hints I figured out... When you have /dev/hda and /dev/sda in your system: 1) Set up <bootloader> <global config:type="list"> <global_entry> <key>disk</key> <value>disk=/dev/sda bios=0x80</value> </global_entry> <global_entry> <key>disk</key> <value>disk=/dev/hda bios=0x81</value> </global_entry> <global> ... </bootloader> to generate the lines disk=/dev/sda bios=0x80 disk=/dev/hda bios=0x81 in lilo.conf. 2) To make lilo install on /dev/sda instead of /dev/hda there seems to be only one way which is not yet documented: <bootloader> <loader_type>lilo</loader_type> <location>custom</location> <loader_device>/dev/sda</loader_device> </bootloader> The "custom" value for location seems to do the trick. Any other combination that seems to make sens, will fail. E.g. location = mbr loader_device = /dev/sda ends up with "boot=/dev/hda" location = / ends up with /dev/hda1, although "/" is /dev/sda1 in my system. Bootloader part cause yast crash

Hello to you all, I wrote for the following bootloader part and Yast will crashes with errormessage (xml is checked with tidy): .... bootloader/routines/misc.ycp:974 invalid cast of vcp value: [$["section_entry"]:$["key"]:"initrd"........ Explanation of config tags

Hello, I know that I have found a AutoYast page in www where all the tags like <partition>,<mail> ... are explained and listed. Now I couldn't find this url again. Does someone of you know the url? I do not mean the references that you can find on A. Nashif AutoYast page. Hi, since several people requested the example set, I put it on the web. You can download it here: http://www.bio.ifi.lmu.de/~steiner/ayex.tgz dhcpd.conf - part for using pxelinux fstab.zassenhaus - example fstab to create partition profile info - specific info file for the initrd lilo-i386.xml - lilo profile lmu.xml - my standard profile makeInfo - put the info file into the SuSE initrd transferer by pxelinux makePartition - create a partition profile from an fstab part_zassenhaus_keep.xml - the partition profile created from the fstab.zassenhaus pxelinux.cfg - the pxelinux.cfg. Copy boot.iso to partition....

Hi All! I am looking for a way to copy the SuSE boot.iso ( CD to start the installation ) on a partition an boot from this partition. Is there any way for doing this? Thanks a lot! Bye Alexander

Ist es möglich diesen Vorgang zu automatisieren, z.b. per Skript ? Testing of config files

Hello to you, I'm a system administrator and I just try to install Linux on my Computerpool with AutoYast, before I did it years ago with master images. I try to write the configfile (autoinst.xml) by hand, because AutoYast doesn't produce that what I need. Questions: 1. Is it only possible to test a created configfile's during install on a test machine? Is there no development enviroment or something else? At the moment I only do a xml check with tidy. Problem: I have got completly similar computers expect the harddisc's. There are three Western Digital WD400EB (20.000 logical sectors) and fifteen Western Digital WD400BB (4800 logical sectors). This difference causes a problem with region tags in partition part of Configfile. How can I do a harddisc check as rule to create the region tags?
