crypted filesystems

Hi, I noticed the possibility to create crypted file system and wanted to give it a try on one of my data partition. I checked crypt checkbox for one of ext3 partitions, entered password two times and noticed that crypting information was even written correctly into XML-file, but Ifter installing I can't find any visible sign of crypted file system. Nothing different in fstab/mount. Do I search signs from wrong places or crypting really doesn't have to work this time? -- Peeter

Hi.. We have an bootable custum CD now wich asks for wich Installation should be done and after some time it boots from harddisk. This stands in our isolinux.cfg ################## isolinux.cfg ########### default harddisk # tokenring mit IDE Platte label tokenringide kernel linux append vga=normal initrd=initrd ramdisk_size=65536 install=cdrom:// autoyast=file://tokenringide.xml display sample.msg # tokenring mit SCSI Platte label tokenringscsi kernel linux append vga=normal initrd=initrd ramdisk_size=65536 install=cdrom:// autoyast=file://tokenringscsi.xml display sample.msg # hard disk label harddisk kernel linux append SLX=0x202 implicit 0 prompt 1 timeout 100 ########### ende ############ And in the sample.msg we describe the bootoptions. Anyone using Athlon and AutoYAST?

Hi again! After installing quite a few Pentium based machines with SuSE 8.0 and AutoYaST I tried to get it running on an Athlon system. Unfortunately the installation stops after packages are installed with a nice green box complaining about "clients/inst_finish.ycp not found". I had a look at this and I found that for some reason the mounted cramfs was empty (all files gone). Anyone having similar problems? After this I upgraded to latest yast2-module-autoinst - no improvements, instead YaST2 now asks me wether it should start the installation ... so I went back to the original one ... I also tried the "mem=nopentium" option - without success. Can this really be a Athlon specific problem? Or does anyone have a different idea? Some Problems with Autoyast2

Hi All I have some questions to autoyast2, perhaps there is one on this list, who could help me. I want to install linux on several different systems. How could i solve the following problem: 1.) There a differnce between IDE and SCSI, ist it possible to have one controlfile, that handles both plattforms (fdsik, fromat, lilo, and so on)? 2.) There are also different NIC's on this system. I defined no module in the controlfile and it will work , but after installation every user will be ask to install an new NIC, thats allready installed <interfaces config:type="list" > <interface> <BOOTPROTO>dhcp</BOOTPROTO> <STARTMODE>onboot</STARTMODE> <UNIQUE></UNIQUE> <device>eth0</device> <module></module> <options></options> </interface> </interfaces> 3.) Is there a way to autoprobe the graphical interface ( hardewareinterface and resolution)? 4.) After installing by using autoyast2 i get the KDM-Login frist time, secondtime i get the consolen-Login 5.) When i try to install an extented package-list i allways get a failure about some packages, that was not found - Is there a solution for this Problem? <software> <addons config:type="list" /> <base>my-list</base> </software> the list 'my-list' is in the same directory as the default one 6.) Is there a way to include an automatic sound autoprobe by installing and only there is a problem the user could change it manually after installation? (Auto)YaST

And once more problems! I tried the new yast2-module-autoinst packages (both 2.5.26 and 2.5.27rc1) with the result that YaST is no longer AutoYaST: Now on every start it asks me wether it should start the automated installation and waits for me to press "OK". And in the same display box it claims that all necessary configuration data is available. So what is this about? The version taken from CD/DVD works fine without any user interaction, but as soon as I switch to newer versions everything is a mess. Another possibility could be a buggy XML file (though it works with older versions). I checked the documentation coming with the latest release and it suggests to use the program tidy to check the XML syntax. But this one seems to need a .dtd file (/usr/lib/YaST2/include/control-file.dtd) which I couldn't find. So once again - anyone out there knowing how to prevent this missbehaviour or where to find the .dtd file? AutoYaST1 can't find infofile

Hi. I'm new to autoinstall. I'm using AutoYast1 for now. I've made a boot floppy for nfs installs, but linuxrc can't find the infofile. I have it on the bootdisk as /suse/setup/descr/info. Linuxrc starts, I get a screen in color saying "Searching for Infofile". After 3 seconds I get a mono screen saying "Can't open cdrom". I tried copying it to the root directory as well. How to create the control file for AutoYast2

Hi all, I try to install SuSE 8.0 from NFS server by using AutoYast2. I've already create a boot floppy. According to the document on AutoYast2 http://www.suse.de/~nashif/autoinstall/ you have to create the control file and make sure that package yast2-config-autoinst install on the system. 1) could somebody show me where can I get the package yast2-config-autoinst ? 2) How to create control file using the system ? Yast ncurses aborting during online update

Dear List, For the past few weeks, my two SuSE 8.0 systems can't do the text-mode based Yast2 online update. After the small window "Getting available server list..." the program aborts with: /sbin/yast: line 149: 20773 Aborted /usr/lib/YaST2/bin/y2base $module "$@" ncurses Anybody have any idea what's wrong? I have tried: - reinstall all yast packages - install the update available yast2-config-online-update.rpm The logfiles in /var/log/y2* don't provide much usefull information. Keeping partitions...

Hi there! As a former user of yast1 autoinstall I'm missing a little feature: I'd like to keep a certain partition on the client machines and use the rest of the hard disk for Linux. This was possible with YaST1, but there's nothing about a similar feature in the AutoYaST documentation. Is there a (un-)documented way to do this or did I miss something? Merging xml files

Hello Anas, I just wonder, why you use saxon for merging the xml files and not the small tool xsltproc contained in the package libxslt. It faster by Magnitutes and also soes not scramble up the Scripts in CDATA as mergeClasses/Saxon does. Problems with creating custom CD

Hi, I wish to compose custom install CD so that server could be fully restored from single CD without network. I'm booting from this same CD and my boot command line looks like this: autoyast=floppy://myserverl.xml install=cdrom:// Now I'm stuck with last problem: after configuring and partitioning setup wants to mount install media but fails because CD is mounted already and busy: Could not mount the source medium. mount: /dev/hdd already mounted or /var/adm/mount busy mount: according to mtab, /dev/hdd is already mounted on /var/adm/mount. What I do wrong and how to get this setup working? -- Peeter

BTW. I made the CD on an OS/2 System with mkisofs and cdrecord. And I looked into the soure of the YaST2 autoinstall package and find the part wich looks for the CD. But I don't know what exactly YaST2 is looking for. A special file or only the Volume Name? regards Stephan Joerrens

Hi. I made an own CD with only the needed RPMs and an disk with the autoinst.xml. WIth the original DVD it works great, but the final target system has no DVD, only CD-ROM. So I made my own CD Image. But every time I get teh message that this is not the right CD for an autoinstall, but YaST2 accept these CD as source..... Here is my mkisofs command: mkisofs -oe:\images\autosuse.img -p"Stephan.Joerrens(a)GAD.de" -P"GAD DZS/ABS" -A"SuSE-Linux-Professional- DEi386-8.0.0#autoinstall0" -V"SuSEautoinst.001" -r -T -J -pad -bsuse/images/boot/isolinux.bin -csuse/images/isolinux.catalog -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 boot-info-table . I looked in th esource of the autoinstall part, but I didn't find the right part or what exactly wants Yast2 to accept an CD as source for an autoinstallation. Under 7.1 our own CD has worked fine. yast2 update problem

Dear all, I am just trying ot update my old 7.1 system to 8.0. I bought the 7.1 DVD and am trying to upgrade via ftp/boot disk. I manage to get the update running and get all of my 620 or so packages updated. Then the system tried the first boot and I shortly see a screen with a few error messages (looks like missing shared libraries for/of qt or so) which is immediately followed with an error message that the upgrade failed. Does anyone know what this is about and/or how to fix it ? For information: I have a Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop, for details see: http://www.slac.stanford.edu/~hadig/projects/dell/dell.html By the way: I have another problem: After loading the PCMCIA modules, my floppy drive is dead which makes loading of the network drivers impossible. Solution to this is to NOT insert the modules3 disk when asked for but choose "Back" and then load the network modules by hand from disk modules3. Hope that helps. live eval 8.0 on a IBM 760xl..

I am trying to get this to run on my wifes 760xl laptop. it doesnot suppert booting form the cdrom so I of course used rawrite to create a boot disk from bootdisk in the suse/disks/ directory when I restart laptop the suse logo comes up and I get: Could not fine ramdisk: initrd Pres a key to reboot. I found initrd on the live eval cd under suse/images/boot/, but am unsure on how to go about creating the bootdisk so I can boot the cdrom. If this works and she likes it I may be able to pull one more wincomp off my network. Hi again, I just discovered that there is a problem in the SuSE 8.0 network-/ dsl-setup which screws the order in which the networkdevices are initialized in the bootprocess. The routes are still ok but somehow all networkdevices switched place. Before reboot: eth0: 3com-card eth1: 3com card eth2: realtek card after reboot: eth0: realtek card (WHY?) eth1: 3com card eth2: 3com card I've noticed that after setting up a fresh system and running YAST, YAST does not recognise the allready working NICs and proposes to set them up again, this time as eth3 till eth5. During auto-install it probes for the cards in a certain order, this may not be reflected in the final config. I had ths problem and resolved it by settting the variable INITRD_MODULES in /etc/rc.config with the modules listed in the order I wanted them loaded. e.g.: INITRD_MODULES="pcnet32 eepro100" Then run 'mk_initrd' to generate the initial ramdisk containing these modules. Check that the /etc/lilo.conf (or whatever boot loader you use) loads the initrd generated above. e.g.: In /etc/lilo.conf, the entry would read: image = /boot/vmlinuz root = /dev/xxx label = linux initrd=/boot/initrd After reboot, the modules are loaded in the order specified. This method makes sure that modules are loaded before the root partition boots. Hi all, I want to install a DSL-Router with multiple NICs. The Softwareinsatllation via Autoyast works real nice. But now comes my problem: When I set up the DSL-configuration via YAST everything is working pretty fine at first, but after the next reboot neither DSL or the rest of my NICs are working proberly. It seems that the complete network-setup is messed up. I tried every ethernetcable on each NIC and discovered that the interfaces changed somehow. The routes are still ok but somehow all networkdevices switched place. Before reboot: eth0: 3com-card eth1: 3com card eth2: realtek card after reboot: eth0: realtek card (WHY?) eth1: 3com card eth2: 3com card I've noticed that after setting up a fresh system and running YAST, YAST does not recognise the allready working NICs and proposes to set them up again, this time as eth3 till eth5. Am I doing something wrong while installing the system via Autoyast? It turns out the problem I was having had nothing to do with SCSI or RAID. What happened was that my partitioning scheme was something along the lines of this: sda5: 512M sda6: 512M swap sda7: 2048M sda8: max <--- here's the problem sda9: 2048M The way I was using 'max' was that it allots the remaining space to its partition after ALL other partitions have been accounted for. Apparently, what actually happens is that it allots the remaining space taking into account only those partitions that have already been defined. This means that if you specify a 'max' partition it must always be last. Because all the space had already been allotted, YaST complained that the partition table was invalid. I think it'd be beneficial to allow a 'max' partition to be anywhere in the partitioning order. I imagine it'd probably be pretty easy to implement in code. I'd do it myself but I haven't seen any source code for this project. Thanks Volkmar. I tried replacing the root image using mkcramfs and I was successful to a certain degree. Now my problem is that I'm unable to partition the hard drive. YaST2 complains that the hard drive's partition table is unsupported. I've seen this error before and it was due to YaST trying to create all partitions as primary. See http://www.suse.de/~nashif/autoinstall/bugs.html#AEN60. That's why I wanted to use the inst-sys directory, so that I could use the updated package. Using the updated package has worked before on a standard IDE hard drive, but now I'm using two SCSI drives with RAID support and can't get the auto-partitioning to work. Has anyone had any success using autoyast with this type of configuration? Any hints? [HELP] Can not find installation source.

Hi *, i am already running a Redhat KickStart server, but im not very familiar with SuSE AutoYast or ALICE. Actually i got a problem with the Bootmanagement i guess. The system start up read the info file but can't find a source to install from. That is what i have already done: - I set up a NFS service and i am exporting SuSE 8.0 FTP Version (mirroring ftp.suse.com). The NFS Server is called "linuxsrv". - I created a bootdisk (default) and added the "info" file and the "autoinst.xml" to the root directory of the floppy. - I created a modules disk (default). Then i replaced the initrd with a new one (including 3c90x.o and aic7xxx.o). - The autoinst.xml file was created with the yast2 mod and checked with tidy. That is what happen: - After loading the kernel and modules from the disk the setup stops with a message that says that the is no valid installation source. I double check the nfs-server and it is possible to do a nfs-installtion on the target system with the manual setup from the bootdisk. Here is my info file ... i found example info-files with different syntax in the www and i am not sure if this one is correct. Hi, at the moment our installserver is running quite good. What I don't like is going to every machine as soon a reinstall is necessary. So what do I plan to do: I want every client to start up and check whether he needs to be installed or not (best including wake up on lan). Ok this is the main aim and want to realise it step by step. Thinking of the following: There is one bootp/tftp, dhcp and/or PXE Server running. And for sure the installserver itself. My problem is now. What do I need PXE or only dhcp and tftp. And how to set it up. The first aim would be to get a full networkinstall without any boot media. Hi all, For some reason, the root image (<path to suse installation>/suse/images/root) is still being read instead of inst-sys (<path to suse installation>/suse/inst-sys). I needed the inst-sys directory so that I could run the updated version yast2-module-autoinst. I did this according to the directions at http://www.suse.de/~nashif/autoinstall/bugs.html#AEN110. This worked successfully when I tested installation of my workstation. YaST2 started from inst-sys. But now I'm trying to do the installation onto another machine, and it keeps trying to read the the root image instead of inst-sys. Any idea why the behavior differs between these two machines? I start my installation .. and all look nice.. but after yast2.. make my partition ..send me a messages ..that the images is already mounted or something like that... and interrupt my installation... I downloaded the complete directory of Suse to my HD. I try to install it, all went great, until after the formatingo of the target partition. It try to mount the source partition, who was already mounted (when it load the Root file), and give me a error......../dev/hdaX already mounted at ........ Kind of a complicated install problem need help with

After a week of frustration I've finally got Suse 8.0 installed but..... Using LILO I can boot Suse but when I try to boot Windows it hangs with "Loading Windows". I've looked on the Suse web site and found a reference to that. The reference said the Lilo config was wrong and to do fdisk -l to get the right Windows boot drive. Thing is my lilo.conf was set up correctly. Hardware: MSI K7T266 Pro2 Series motherboard w/integrated Promise RAID Maxtor Ultra-133 PCI IDE card No hd's connected to mb ide 1 or 2. Two hds form RAID 1 on the mb, and two are connected to the PCI IDE controller card as master drives. The RAID drive is my Windows installation. The motherboard allows you to choose which physical hd to boot from. When I set it to boot from a hd connected to the Ultra 133 Lilo starts and I can boot linux but not windows. When I set the mb boot to the RAID, Lilo bombs out. If I take the floppy out bypassing Lilo, Windows boots ok. When I set the mb to boot RAID, Linux installs but the only way I can get it to boot is through the DVD. I installed Suse 8.0 by setting my mb to boot hda, first hd on the PCI IDE. Not knowing this I installed Windows with the mb booting from RAID. Drive C on the raid is the only primary bootable partition. Suse was installed in an extended linux partition on a hd connected to the PCI IDE card. Here's my lilo.conf file. I commented out booting from hda6 and set it to boot from floppy. I also ran lilo to update the configuration. # Modified by YaST2. I can mount Windows Drive C. Haven't tried any other drives. I'm under the assumption that the RAID is working on the mb and no additional modules etc need to be set up in Linux. Is this a false assumption? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!! I dread the idea of having to change CMOS settings everytime I need to switch OSs. Thanks! Eric

It seems that the complete network-setup is messed up. I tried every ethernetcable on each NIC and discovered that the interfaces changed somehow. The routes are still ok but somehow all networkdevices switched place. Before reboot: eth0: 3com-card eth1: 3com card eth2: realtek card after reboot: eth0: realtek card (WHY?) eth1: 3com card eth2: 3com card I've noticed that after setting up a fresh system and running YAST, YAST does not recognise the allready working NICs and proposes to set them up again, this time as eth3 till eth5. Am I doing something wrong while installing the system via Autoyast? Yast2 problem again

Hi Another mail around Yast2 installation. I didn´t achieve to change the installation media of my SuSe. Maybe is it a unknown bug from Yast2, or it is maybe a known bug, specailly there in the ftp version of Suse 8.0? Yesturday I did a litle reverse enginering to find out why I could not change de Install Media, I just put some extra Message in the Yast2 module, such as MediaUI.ycp and InstMedia.ycp . I find out that for some reason my HardDisk isn´t a valid Installation Device, as responds to the call to SCR::Read(...) in the MountMedia function from InstMedia.ycp . From which file did SCR::Read() read the configuration, I didn´t know the answer, maybe some of you. But there muts be the problem, no......... Carlos Fanfmeier

Yast2 InstallMedia Panic

Hi again, yestarday I did have the problem to install suse from my hard, but I didn´t find any answer to my problem, so I decided to install it from a local ftp server........it was succefully..........great installation. I boot my brand new suse distro without any problem, but thenn I try to change the Install Media to my hard disk, but for my surprise there was the same error from the installation..........un able to mount the partition or media bla bla bla.......... Is there any way to tell autoyast to do this automatically? From the explanation below, it seems that I have to manually run fdisk and create the extended partition before I attempt the autoinstall. What I'd like to do is specify the extended partition in the configuration file. Any ideas? Hi all, I'm trying to configure a drive with 7 partitions, but when I start the autoinstall, fdisk fails apparantly because it tries to make all partitions primary. The only info I could find on this (http://www.suse.de/~nashif/autoinstall/bugs.html#AEN60) says to upgrade to the latest version of the module, which I've done. However, I still don't see a way to mark a partition as extended. Has anyone had any success configuring a drive with more than 4 partitions without using LVM? Thanks, Robert
