[opensuse-artwork] State of 12.2 Artwork
Hi Team, Sorry I've been quiet for the last few weeks, been busy with work. Catching up with things now, it looks like we've still got plenty of work to do before we're 'ready' for 12.2 Please correct me if I'm wrong, but the below is my understanding of the current state of play We have my poorly implemented draft versions of the wallpaper, bootsplash, and all application splashes done, uploading to the appropriate gitorious repository http://gitorious.org/opensuse/art and implemented in 12.2/Factory as the appropriate branding packages We also have a new design floating around (source here) http://dl.dropbox.com/u/32600284/test3.xcf.zip which is being billed as the 'new 12.2 design' in the Splash screen contest. However, this design is not in our gitorious repository, and is not packaged in any way, manner, or form for 12.2/Factory This leaves us with quite a dilemma - Being an xcf file and not our usual svg, it is going to need someone to do a significant amount of work to rework all of our tools currently held in http://gitorious.org/opensuse/art to properly implement this design across the distribution. I hate to be a party pooper, I am not prepared to do that much work alone, and am not aware of any others working on packaging art for 12.2. We've historically used SVG's because it makes things a lot easier when it comes to this implementation stuff (and there's other benefits too but not relevant for this discussion) I believe svg's is the right way we should be doing things and even if I didn't, I don't think approaching milestone 3 is a good time to throw out all of our tooling for the sake of this (rather nice) new design. If that design can be implemented in our usual svg format, I am prepared to do the work for packaging and implementing it, as well as remaking all the splash screens like I already have done for Factory If it can't be, we're going to need people to help get this design working and packaged - please take a look at what we have in the gitorious repo to learn how we're doing currently and all the places this design needs to be used. If you're interested in helping, please dive in, and I'll do everything I can to help you. Alternatively, we can return to the already implemented draft svg design and just tweak and tune that, all of those files are in gitorious, again, feel free to roll up your sleeves and pitch in, I'll help every way I can - I can be found here, or on #opensuse-artwork as usual Regards Richard / Ilmehtar -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org

I can certainly commit the artwork to the GIT repo, if someone gives
me the commit rights :)
Or you can do it for me. Also, there is an SVG equivalent as well,
which is exactly the same as XCF (which was an original proof of
concept) done fully in vectors.
I have updated the archive
(http://dl.dropbox.com/u/32600284/test3.xcf.zip) you mentioned,
removing all the garbage. So now it only has an XCF (for those who
would like it in GIMP format) and SVG for those who prefer SVG

"I've manually removed the 2 png background inside it" what are those
2? There was only one to my knowledge - the noise ... which it be
honest it looks OK without. What is the other one?
I tried to make a sensible, scalable noise in Inkscape, but for now
there is no effect which would work well, so I had to use an "ugly
hack"TM :)

In the source I found twice the image tag editing in text mode, proof of my high design skills :-) But not sure at 100%. Eugene just do what is the best for the design, but resulting image have to be light so small machine with not that much video ram will not struggle during boot time or first desktop background display. Now to follow what Richard (Ilhmetar) has done previously, could you manage some clipping layers, or adjust it to the different ratio 4:3 5:4 16:9 19:10 as previous background has been done. (just look in the folder on git) Then it will be easier to resize and keep a high end visual effect. Martin (tittiatcoke) has a package for the plymouth branding already, once we are ready, I will ping him to include our work. ps : don't reply to me and ml I'm already subscribed if your mail client can't fill a bug against it! -- Bruno Friedmann Ioda-Net Sàrl www.ioda-net.ch openSUSE Member & Ambassador GPG KEY : D5C9B751C4653227 irc: tigerfoot -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org
Right. Soonish I'll have a script that does all the aspect ratio etc.
correction aromatically, but for the time being I'll make a squared
version.
" resulting image have to be light" - but we do not use SVG/XCF images
for boot-splash ... that one only takes PNGs , no? And PNGs are about
250KB in size at least they are on my tests...

Alternatively, we can return to the already implemented draft svg design and just tweak and tune that, all of those files are in gitorious, again, feel free to roll up your sleeves and pitch in, I'll help every way I can - I can be found here, or on #opensuse-artwork as usual

Richard until someone kick ass of admins on gitorious repository, You, Javier or Marcus (I will not invite gnokki even if he's comitter) have to push modification on the repository
I've pick up what Eugene has prepared in a patch easy to apply against the repository http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13333867/openSUSE/0001-Added-new-12.2-official-wa llpaper-it-s-EugeneA-redon.patch
There's the svg full and a light one (I've manually removed the 2 png background inside it) The carbon effect is loose (was done on the png::: bad <- kill kill ) So this effect has to be recreate in pure svg perhaps http://inkscapestuff.org/content/show.php/CarbonFiber?content=117465
Or the howto for a crappy software I don't have http://ebin.wordpress.com/2007/03/11/how-to-diy-your-own-carbon-fiber-wall paper/
You have access too, right??? According to the list of committers on https://github.com/openSUSE ...
Nope I mean artwork for the distribution is located in -art on gitorious :-) -- Bruno Friedmann Ioda-Net Sàrl www.ioda-net.ch openSUSE Member & Ambassador GPG KEY : D5C9B751C4653227 irc: tigerfoot -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org

I can certainly commit the artwork to the GIT repo, if someone gives me the commit rights :)

Or you can do it for me. Also, there is an SVG equivalent as well, which is exactly the same as XCF (which was an original proof of concept) done fully in vectors. I have updated the archive (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/32600284/test3.xcf.zip) you mentioned, removing all the garbage. So now it only has an XCF (for those who would like it in GIMP format) and SVG for those who prefer SVG
Cool, those work. Thanks :D

wrote: Hi Team,
Sorry I've been quiet for the last few weeks, been busy with work. Catching up with things now, it looks like we've still got plenty of work to do before we're 'ready' for 12.2
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but the below is my understanding of the current state of play
We have my poorly implemented draft versions of the wallpaper, bootsplash, and all application splashes done, uploading to the appropriate gitorious repository http://gitorious.org/opensuse/art and implemented in 12.2/Factory as the appropriate branding packages
We also have a new design floating around (source here) http://dl.dropbox.com/u/32600284/test3.xcf.zip which is being billed as the 'new 12.2 design' in the Splash screen contest.
However, this design is not in our gitorious repository, and is not packaged in any way, manner, or form for 12.2/Factory
This leaves us with quite a dilemma - Being an xcf file and not our usual svg, it is going to need someone to do a significant amount of work to rework all of our tools currently held in http://gitorious.org/opensuse/art to properly implement this design across the distribution.
If that design can be implemented in our usual svg format, I am prepared to do the work for packaging and implementing it, as well as remaking all the splash screens like I already have done for Factory
