RE: [suse-amd64] Any success with Tyan Thunder K8W (s2885) ?
Actually, the Tyan S2885 doesn't support DDR400 (PC3200) memory. It only
supports PC2700/PC2100/PC1600 DIMMS, so using the DDR400 could be a big
part of your problem. I have had a TYAN S2885 board for several months now
(even a prerelease board), and the main problem I have had is with the AGP
graphics. There is a lot of work going on to get the AGP graphics/Nvidia
drivers working correctly on this board, as far as BIOS updates to put
proper values in the MTRRs, new drivers, kernel patches, etc.. There is a
kernel bug in the mtrr code that makes the system broken with over 4 GB of
memory.

Hi, I second the swap of memory to DDR333, if you look at a couple of tests that have been performed, the difference DDR333 to DDR400 is a couple of percent depending on what benchmark. Can you try it with DDR33 4x256MB Registered ECC, two in each processors memory slots? I have this config(but 4x512MB), all PCI slots full supporting 2TB of RAID5 and RAID10 storage and the system is rock solid. There are known problems with older chip revisions handling DDR400 in the Opteron Processor forums, usually on 244 veriants though. Don

Well, at least now I know it is possible.
My memory is 1GB ECC registered DDR333 directly from dallas memory, and I've got 8GB installed with good results on my pair of 246s.
Interesting: you are using 246's but DDR333 memory? I am using DDR400, which may be part of the problem. May I ask if there was any technical reason for going with the 333Mhz parts?
Note that you MUST be using the suse -156 or later 2.4.21 kernel on that board or there are huge problems. Start with that if you're not there yet and see how far that gets ya.
A good suggestion. I just downloaded & upgraded but alas it made no difference. I am still suspicious of an incompatability between this motherboard and memory. A helpful soul in another forum posted this link which I found interesting:

Memory support is not to do with the mainboard given that the memory
controller is within the CPU - whatever form of 184pin memory is
addressed by the CPU (as there is no Northbridge based memory
controller) and is linked by the ROMSIP and X & Y groups of BIOS are
supported - so whilst the processor and BIOS are constituent factors for
PC3200 support - the mainboard physically is nothing to do with that.

Actually, actually, all of the above is now fixed except for the AGP write bandwidth issue, which peaks at about 275MB/s for 4x and 335 MB/s for 8x for as-yet unknown reasons. Tyan asked for my benchmarks the other day and for tips on installing SuSE and a -156 kernel, so I believe they may be taking a look. The BIOS I'm running on the 2885 is the '0.01b' BIOS here (don't ask why the numbering of what appears to be an improvement appears to break sequence back to zero): ftp://ftp.tyan.com/Chipset_AMD/K8/2885BIOS/ And there's an official beta here that doesn't include the "memory hole" option which gets you your full N GB of memory available even with a big AGP aperture: http://www.tyan.com/support/html/bios_support.html#beta These also "unlock" the HT clock frequency, so you can easily bump to 800 MHz and see those AMD signalling errata in action. :) I have managed to get everything on the board to work well except the lmsensors support (which I haven't yet tried), SATA RAID (single disks works fine) and good AGP bandwidth. The AGP problem appears to be on Tyan's radar now and I verified that it works fine on another 8151-carrying board (the Iwill DK8X) so I'm hopeful that a solution will manifest. When it does, I'll post a complete howto for the S2885. -mcq

My experiences would certainly seem to support that, but Tyan seems to disagree. Please see the bottom of: http://www.tyan.com/support/html/memory_s2885.html Nonetheless, you may still be correct. Note that they only list two recommended brands of DDR400, but 12 DDR333 makers. I would be very curious if *anyone* has gotten DDR400 to work in this motherboard.

Ironically, the nvidia drivers seem tp work fine for me. Of course, I only have 2GB or RAM. I didn't benchmark them but they sure *look* fast. gears (at it's default window size) yields ~9375 FPS.
