What are peoples experiences running 64bit JVM's under SuSE? We are getting some Opteron systems and trying to figure out what JVM to use, Sun's or one of the others thanks Aaron ____________________________________________ Aaron Macks amacks@techtarget.com TechTarget PGP keyid: FBE946C5 117 Kendrick St, Suite 800 Phone: (781) 657-1519 Needham, MA 02494 Fax: (781) 657-1100

from an earlier post: Everytime I do an upgrade or install, I try mozilla and java. There is one site I have never had any luck with: http://stockcharts.com/charts/carpet.html Tonight I installed th 64 bit 1.4.2 java re from blackdown. ftp://ftp.tux.org/pub/java/JDK-1.4.2/amd64/fcs/ It has a 64 bit pluggin for 64 bit mozilla. For the first time, I can use the above site. I may have to try that java version on my 32 bit machine, but not to tonight. Might as well quit on a good note. Doug

I'm using the Sun JDK (5.0) on my Opteron servers and the java that ships with 9.1 Pro (java2-1.4.x) on my Athlon 64 desktops. I can't say that I've had problems with either. I used the Sun JDK on the Opterons just so I would have the latest java for tomcat. I've used the Sun, blackdown, SuSE jvms on various test boxes without incident with the exception of the SuSE jvm that shipped with 9.0. Replaced it with the Sun jvm, but that was an x86 box. John

Does jre=jvm? I'm sure that Sun and other jvm's run java just fine, but have you tried the browser pluggins with 64bit mozilla? Did they work for you? The only 64 bit jre I have found is blackdown and it is the only one with pluggins I have been able to make work with 64bit mozilla/firefox. Doesn't mean it's the only one, just the only one I could get the pluggins working. Doug

Can't really say for the Opteron servers, as these are production tomcat servers, don't really surf the internet from them. The java was used for that purpose, not the browser. I use my desktop and copy files to/from server as needed and manage either through cli or webmin.

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp and chose the J2SE 5.0 JRE and agree to the license. I'm using the JDK on my servers though, still same jvm in both.
Doesn't mean it's the only one, just the only one I could get the pluggins working.

Do you have a specefic site that is causing problems? I run into more sites with flash than with java. What a headache. John

All sites if I remember correctly. One site in particular: http://stockcharts.com/charts/carpet.html That one never worked with any distro (32bit or 64bit) or jre until I installed the 64bit blackdown. I've wiped out that install and going with a 9.2 install on my amd64 box. Fighting lockups and problems caused by the lockups right now. I think I've found the problem(s)... time will tell. Anyway, I need to go eat some turkey with the in-laws tomorrow then test some more things. Could be a day or so before I can install and test different jvm's. Doug

Hi, i´m running Suse 9.1 with the latest kernel of the day and have installed the shipped Java version plus the 64bit blackdown under /usr/java. I´m running Opera 7.54 with the shipped version and Firefox with the blackdown version. The named site works for me with both browsers. Michael

Only have "few" uses for Java here, but the ones I've had Sun's has functioned flawlessly.
