Hello,
I am new to this mailing list; the technical support of SuSE
recommended to join
me this.
I am using Tyan Tiger K8W and GeForce4 MX440 (no brand), and having trouble
at starting X. CPU and memory are Opteron240 x 2, and PC2700 x 2.
I could install SuSE 9 AMD64 without trouble, where I saw graphical installer
running on KDE and SaX2 worked. However, once the system restarted,
X-window does not work. I can only work with run-level 3.
Starting run-level 3, I tested 'startx' or so, but failed: KDE shows
splash screen
where progress of initiation is shown, but stop before changing user desktop.
At this point, cursor followed the movement of the mouse, but keyboard
did not work.
I suggested to use both BIOS and kernel options. I will try every combination
of them.
If there are some one who can use use X-windows with Tyan's motherboard,
please tell me BIOS settings and kernel options.
I pass through the title of the archive of this mailing list, but
cannot find about
Tyan Tiger K8W (but Thunder K8W, which is quite different mother
board, I think).

It's more likely the X86Config file. It is in /etc/X11/XF86Config Read the man pages on XF86Config and figure out which driver you need to call for the GeForce chipset. You can also run the rescue disk and request it to set up the file for you. If you can see the splash screens, your bios is ok. When the screen goes dark and nothing happens, it's much worse :-) Patience, persistence, truth, Dr. mike

His X server did start, otherwise he would not seen the KDE splash. Something is going wrong in the KDE startup. ~/.xsession-errors or /var/log/XFree86* may hold a clue. -Andi

Good point, I missed that. I see the graphics card splash on my screen and ignored the KDE in front of it. Definitly not the bios :-) Patience, persistence, truth, Dr. mike
Hi,
It may or not make difference, but you could try using nVidia
drivers. Altought you´ve got probably VESA drivers during install X should
try to start at higher resolutions at the normal operation. nVidia driver
also gives you option of using hardware acceleration for 3D as well. The
package bellow will compile you the server component. The
installation/compile should run pretty straight.
You should change you graphics drivers to the one indicated in the
documentation in the /etc/X11/XF86Config file. SaX should help you change
monitor resolutions and other settings.
Good luck.

Thanks for every advices and hints. The status is improved.
I have not checked every combination of BIOS settings and boot options.
The problem seems sitting in video card. Using 'vesa' driver, I got a beautiful
desktop.
To tell the truth, Tyan's mother board is 2nd try of my Opteron life. The 1st
one was/is MSI Master2 FAR (VIA K8T800). With this mother board, I met
the same trouble. I also tested another video card, Radeon 9200SE, and
met the same result. Therefore, I doubted the chip-set. It was the
reason to start Tyan's board. I am not aware of the use of 'vesa' driver.
I will test the driver provided by nVidia.

Hello. Finally, I could solve my problem:
I am using Tyan Tiger K8W and GeForce4 MX440 (no brand), and having trouble at starting X. CPU and memory are Opteron240 x 2, and PC2700 x 2.
I will test the driver provided by nVidia.
A driver provided by nVidia made me happy. In my case, any BIOS settings and boot options were not required.
