Hi folks, I'm new to Linux, but I'm picking things up pretty quickly. This one has me stumped though. I did a fresh-out-of-the-box install of 9.1 on my new AMD 64-based system. I then installed kernel-source, gcc, make and I think one or two other required components, as needed by VMWare GSX installer. I run the script to configure VMWare, and see this: ****************************************** " Trying to find a suitable vmmon module for your running kernel. None of VMware Workstation's pre-built vmmon modules is suitable for your running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes] Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override. What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include] The path "/usr/src/linux/include" is not an existing directory. What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include] ****************************************** I don't have this default path, but I have similar, /usr/src/linux-______/include (where _____ is my version number - I don't have that in front of me). So I key in that path, and it says... The directory of kernel headers [snip] does not match your running kernel [snip]. I sort-of understand what it's trying to tell me, but both the running kernel and the kernel-source were installed at the same time, and from the same 9.1 media - no online updates have occurred that would make them out of sync. I've read a lot about this issue on various postings, but so far none of the suggestions have worked for me. If you have any ideas, I'd really appreciate it. It sounds like you have updated your kernel through Yaz and need to obtain the new source that matches your current kernel. It is available on SuSE FTP site. Curt
Going to chime in on this thread late... I did have vmware working on suse 9.1 amd64, (using vmware-any-any-update68-x8664, and the previous official yast suse kernel) Had some issues (random lockups and the noted problems with vmnet). But it worked. Just tried running it again with the latest kernel update. rincewind 2.6.5-7.75-default. And it didn't work with vmware-any-any-update71 patch, (i.e running vmware-config.pl). However it worked fine with : vmware-any-any-update70. I.e vmmon and vmnet compiled and loaded up fine. However... I cant actually run /bin/vmware anymore I get the following dialogue popup: "VMware Workstation is installed, but it has not been (correctly) configured for your running kernel. To (re-)configure it, your system administrator must find and run "vmware-config.pl". For more information, please read file "INSTALL" in the VMware Workstation documentation directory." However as already noted the modules compiled and loaded fine. I also get the same when starting the init.d/vmware start service: VMware Workstation is installed, but it has not been (correctly) configured for the running kernel. To (re-)configure it, invoke the following command: /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl. What the hang is going on? Any help or suggestions appreciated. On Sat, 2004-06-19 at 02:37, Curt Purdy wrote:

Hmm... Well I fixed it by disabling all networking in the config... weird... Should have worked with my previous settings fine right? I'm guessing networking is even more broke with the latest vmware update. On Tue, 2004-06-22 at 16:17, Joel Wiramu Pauling wrote:

Also forgot to mention in my first post that you can forget about vmware on x86_64 for now. I've heard roomers that 4.5.2 will address it. In my opinion there is (for vmware workstation) only slight difference between 4.5.1 and 4.5.2; both run fine when "any-any-update" 69 or later is applied; you just have to ignore some error messages. For details and further "support" just have a look at http://www.vmware.com/community/thread.jspa?threadID=1310 /ur
