To ECC or not ECC
Greetings Several hours of reading the web and I still cannot overcome my density. I'm looking at a Socket 939 motherboard with one single-core Opteron 148. The motherboard supports ECC or non-ECC RAM The BIOS can turn off ECC if the RAM supports it. What is the kernel's involvement with ECC when it's enabled in the BIOS? Just reporting errors? Does ECC RAM incur a performance hit when no errors are detected? TIA & Cheers

hi, I only googled. :-) Error correction and detection http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Error-correcting_code Q: Difference between ECC and Non- ECC Memory (#2447) http://www.dslreports.com/faq/2447 ECC FAQs http://members.aol.com/mnecctek/faqs.html QUESTION: I got suckered into not buying ECC memory because it was slightly cheaper. I feel like a fool. I should have bought the more expensive ECC memory. Right? http://www.tldp.org/FAQ/sig11/html/ HTH eshsf

Be careful - the cheap mobos are usually not tested with ECC. I don't know if ECC can cause problems, but normally it's best to only use DIMM configurations that have been validated by the motherboard vendors (they tend to document that on their websites as "approved DIMMs" or similar)

Yes.

Memory latency increases slightly, but not much. -Andi
