I've been running into a problem where my system locks up or freezes. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with SuSE. This can happen daily, weekly and mostly, randomly. I have not figured out any common denominator for why this is happening. I can be typing along and bam! everything locks up and I have to power off then back on. I've tried ssh'ing into my machine from another computer and can't get in....host not responding. Has anyone else had this problem? Any thoughts where to start? I don't see anything in the log files. I'm running a Sun W1100z on SuSE 9.1-64. Thanks, Tom -- Tom Nielsen Neuro Logic Systems 1.805.389.5435 x18 www.neuro-logic.com
The inexplicable system crashes I had on my Opeteron Servers were memory related. One of the DIMMs was "bad". Normally the system ran just fine but crashed under very heavy load with no message. It just locked. Running memtestx86+ for 24 hours straight showed up ZERO errors. However setting a few Bonnie's running would crash it in under a minute. Weird. Perhaps you have a memory issue as well. Try doing this: bonnie -s 2048 Change the "2048" to be how many megs of ram you have in total. You need to run it somewhere with that many megs free of disk BTW. If that crashes it, then remove ALL your RAM and repeat the test one DIMM at a time. You may find that you have a Faulty RAM chip. Or maybe its something else. Other things to check are that your RAM is compatible with your Motherboard and that your BIOS is up-to-date. Hope this helps. Cheers!

I've noticed a few times where my X server would lock up, but I was able to ssh in. It seems to happen under heavy system load and if I leave it alone, it ends up comming back and a message is displayed from the arts deamon something about system too busy or something like that. So now, if it happens I kill the artsd to get my X back. B-) On Tuesday 23 November 2004 05:08 pm, Tom Nielsen wrote:

Next time you see it do a strace -p <pid of arts> -o LOG and put the logfile somewhere and report to the list. -Andi

You could connect a serial console or configure netconsole and see if that logs something. -Andi
