Andy- I suspect that they copy the disks from Suse and do not provide manuals of any type. If so this is some type of gray market. Although this may be legal it is not good for Suse or Novell and probably will result in slower Linux development. Anyone from SUSE (Novell) care to comment? I think that probably chumbo.com not the one he means as selling copies, but the other site he mentions: http://pctech101.com/products.php?cat=41 and that site really is either selling copies or it is a scam.

I think Bob was referring to pctech101.com. The cheap "ripoff" CDs have been around almost as long as Linux itself, and it is quite a bit of a grey area. RedHat seems to have gotten tired of them and now require that their trademark at least isn't used (so we now have WhiteBox Linux, etc.). But on the other hand the ripoffs do provide an element of free advertising and market penetration, so SUSE may or may not decide to do anything about them. (I'm in no way affiliated with SUSE, who may well choose neither to confirm nor deny any of the above.) -- O__ ---- Peter Dalgaard Blegdamsvej 3 c/ /'_ --- Dept. of Biostatistics 2200 Cph. I just went to Fry's Electronics today (Nov 2) in Silicon Valley California and they have a full stock of SuSE 9.2 Pro boxes for $89.99.

you can stick to the suse update versions if you dont require printed user manual (only admin manual comes as a hardcopy with update editions), but all the manuals are included on the cd/dvd media in electronic form. so once you bought a suse, and dont need the paperwork, just go for the updates and you can save a few books and maybe some trees or energy. and that pctech101 stuff, if they dont have permission from suse, they are probably acting illegally because there is commercial software on the suse media if i am not mistaken (always been in the past), which you are not allowed to spread electronically, offer for download, sell additional unlicensed copies and so forth. wonder how they make those low prices possible, and dont even ship any paper manual at all. if its licensed by suse, then i wonder where similar lowcost offerings in europe or other places can be found. cheers.
$59.00 US is the usual price for the SuSE Pro upgrade, so
a reseller having it for $57.00 US is not unusual.

Hi-
I gueas I did not type clearly. IMHO
1. I think that http://pctech101.com/products.php?cat=41 is gray market at
best (and IMHO should be avoided)
2. I think that chumbo.com is legitimate (as indicated by LeRoy H. Maxwell
III) so I ordered from chumbo.com
3. For $2 and shipping I would have ordered from Suse (Novell) to cutout
middle man and provide more profit for novell to put in Suse development but
Novell appears to have hosed up what was previously previously good
marketing by SUSE. (I must confess a prejudice against Novell after being
forced to to use gropewisely (or was it groupwise?) at a previous employer.
I thought buying SUSE was a wise move by Novell but their web page leaves me
in doubt)
Regards
Bob
