kpf is the kde personal fileserver. How it got onto your panel I couldn't say, 
normally you have to manually right-click on the panel and add it, but it's 
certainly not something unofficial or nefarious. It is simply a quick way for 
a user to share files without having to install and configure nfs or samba or 
ftp. This I think would qualify as "a use".

You should be able to simply right-click on it and select "remove from panel"
