Hi David,

OK I get the same.
You can plug that modeline into you xorg.conf

exactly where? Does it come under Section "Monitor" or Section "Device"

Oops,

The supplied xorg.conf didn't show where to put the modeline. It goes
here:

Section "Modes"
Identifier "Modes[0]"
Modeline "1680x1050" 147.14 1680 1784 1968 2256 1050 1051 1054 1087
-HSync
+Vsync
EndSection

One last thought,

With 8600GT (w/GDDR3) prices in the high $40 low $50 range, you might
consider
an upgrade. The 8600GT (w/GDDR3) is 100% faster than the 8500GT. The 8600GT
provides a 22.4 GB/s memory transfer rate while the 8500GT limps along at a
feeble 10.6 GB/s. To give you a little better feel for the comparison of the
8500GT, the Geforce 4 TI 4600 release some 7 years ago provided 10.4 GB/s of
memory transfer.

I have run an MSI 8600GT O/C edition for the past couple of years
pushing a
24" screen at 1920x1200 with compiz, etc. The 8600GT just rocks. If you bump
the price point up the ~$60 you can find the 9600GT which has a memory transfer
rate of over 57 GB/s equivalent to the 8800GT as well. However for some reason
(Marketing most likely) the price point for the 8800GT is still in the ~$70
range or higher.

Of course if the 8500 works to your liking -- keep it!
