Why not try a live CD, e.g. Knoppix or one of the dozens of others?
This is a great way to start to sort out whether a suspected failure is
hardware related. http://livecdlist.com
How is that? How do you know it's not the same driver software that's
included with whatever version of openSUSE he's running?
If the problem still exists with a liveCD then you're right, it tells you
nothing.
But if the problem doesn't still exist with a liveCD, then you have
learned that it's not hardware but a driver issue instead.
