They are emulating the keyboard. You can configure some bardcode readers to
transmit ascii, but that's usually done via RS232.

In windows bar code scanners / kernel can be configured to dump ascii
data straight into the keyboard buffer so you don't need app support.
Is the same not true in Linux?
