Thanks for the reply Felix, the system was oss 11.0 with grub on it and 
working fine.  It was upgraded to oss 11.1, and still worked fine.  Then 
I made a custom kernel, installed it (done this many times with many 
different versions of oss), and on a reboot the problem surfaced.
