If you're using the graphical login screen, can't you just select "KDE" as 
your session?

If you're using a text login followed by "startx", make sure your environment 
variable DEFAULT_WM is set to either "startkde" or "startkde4 in 
/etc/sysconfig/windowmanager

And finally, if you are logged in directly to your desktop, then log out (not 
shutdown, just logout), and select KDE from the "session" menu on the login 
screen
