No, that had nothing to do with gmail. It never went through gmail.

No, it does not. The "From:" *address* is spoofed. The mail does not
go thru gmail's servers except/unless delivering *to* a gmail addr.
GMail server are involved in the process.
And they could check if email with such content ever left my account beforehand.
And if not, reject email.
