Just a guess.
rcalsasound restart
was missing from previous attempts, and boot did that for you.
BTW, I have the same sound driver and in 10.3 sound level was somewhat low
before I added "model=" parameter to /etc/modprobe.d/sound.
This time I would have to check what is new, as with 11.0 after change
and "rcalsasound restart' I got driver crash.
It seems that driver is buggy. If parameter is unknown that should produce one
message, but not avalanche of other complaints.

I have no idea how the sound got fixed. I guess I should just consider
this a gift from the gods and press on. Thanks to those of you who helped.
