The same happened to me, on a 32 bit system.  Even though the KDE 4 uses 
different locations for the files than KDE 3 its something about the newer 
release of KDE4 makes it hungry for KDE3's blood.  I was freaking out the 
other day watching KDE 3 slowly being uninstalled while trying to update KDE 
4.  I was able to boot into KDE 4, dealing with Knotify crashing ever 2 
seconds, open up YaST in GTK and reinstall the KDEBASE packages and K3B.
