I finally got some speakers that sound OK, and I found a site on the web that
plays music that I don't care for, but it proves that they work. Now, how do I play a CD? I have two CD drives, one a recorder, one just a player. I don't know how to mount them--if that's required--and I don't know how to make the sound come out. And I don't know what they're called, either. I know all this was discussed 5 years ago, but I've forgotten the answers.

Also, it would be nice to have a control that makes one left/right speaker
louder than the other, for better balance, but that does not seem to exist
on the mixer panel.

I think you need to make sure you have the Packman repository and the VideoLan repositories selected. I'm not exactly sure which package is needed, but if you at least load:

audacity
k3b-codecs
libmad
w32codecs-all
normalize
gnormalize

You will pick-up what you need.
