Yes, Cristan's solution is superior to uninstalling
packages which someone else on a system might want
to use (it's not a good idea to assume that all
participants are only working on Linux machines
that nobody else uses).

Your solution (which may also work) is to remove a package. Just what
functionality would I have lost if I had gone your route?
