Hello all,
I hope this hasn't been answered elsewhere, I did not
find it in my search of the archives. I recently
purchased a usb to db25 female parallel printer cable
so I could attach my HP LaserJet 6P to my new
motherboard that has no parallel port. The problem
occurs when I try to use the printer. Hopefully all
relevant information:
SuSE 10.1
uname -a: Linux phantasm 2.6.16.27-0.9-smp #1 SMP Tue
Feb 13 09:35:18 UTC 2007 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64
GNU/Linux
dmesg output: ohci_hcd 0000:00:02.0: wakeup
usb 1-3: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and
address 5
usb 1-3: new device found, idVendor=4348,
idProduct=5584
usb 1-3: new device strings: Mfr=0, Product=0,
SerialNumber=0
usb 1-3: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
drivers/usb/class/usblp.c: usblp0: USB Bidirectional
printer dev 5 if 0 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0x4348 pid 0x5584
dammed@phantasm:~> lsmod |grep usb
usblp 30848 0
usb_storage 97344 1
usbcore 149288 6
usblp,cdc_acm,usb_storage,ehci_hcd,ohci_hcd
scsi_mod 163760 6
st,sr_mod,usb_storage,sg,libata,sd_mod
ide_core 164996 4
usb_storage,ide_cd,amd74xx,ide_disk
When I attempt to set up the printer with YaST, the
printer module segfaults at around 1% of searching the
driver database. The backtrace output is in the
attached text file.
When attempting to set up the printer manually, the
following occurs:
phantasm:~# /usr/sbin/lpadmin -p hplaserjet6p -E -v
usb:/dev/usblp0 -m
/usr/share/cups/model/manufacturer-PPDs/hplip/HP-LaserJet_6P-hpijs.ppd
lpadmin: add-printer (set model) failed:
server-error-internal-error
The cable was purchased from SFCables and comes with
absolutely no useful documentation.
Am I an idiot and missing something simple? Is there
any hope? Should I attempt to return the usb to db25
and use one of those usb to Centronic adaptors?
Thanks in advance to everyone.
