My Dell Inspiron 9400 has a Conexant built-in modem. I had to use a
driver from www.linuxant.com to get it to be recognized. It's free for
speeds up to 14,400 but you have to pay $20 for a license to use it at
higher speeds.

Also - I'm in Albuquerque - fee free to email me privately if there's
something I might be able to do to help.
