Aha, found it. Based on instructions given in a blog that's referred to
from the kpilot.org page, I created an a file
/etc/udev/rules.d/11-visor.rules that contains:
BUS="usb", SYSFS{product}="Palm Handheld*", KERNEL="ttyUSB[13579]",
SYMLINK="pilot"
After rebooting, I find that I can sync using the device name
"/dev/pilot" which magically appears when the hotsync button is
pressed.
