Patrick, please try not to comment on things you don't understand.
The idea behind using rpms is that installing things like this:

rpm -Uvh gaim-1.5.0

is supposed to install the application, not produce error messages
about things that were installed with the distro being missing. Tell
me how whatever you're moaning about would solve that? On second
thought, don't bother. What I do now works fine, and what you suggest
didn't.
