Matt,
KBear has always been a small source of irritation to me as well for
several reasons. That was one reason I turned to Krusader for file
managment and ftp work. It works! Now that it's included with SuSE
10.0, that makes it much easier, I don't have to compile it
myself! ;o)
I think you would find it has many nice features you would like.

Matt,
