Hi Marc,
if it's a matter of cost, you could google for Linux-Windows TCO
studies (and be careful to check who funded them and whether the
methodology employed makes sense).
One that found Linux to be superior is here:

(I have no clue if these are methodically solid.)
There are other studies, arriving at the opposite result.
If it's about freedom, there's little need to do a study (except
GNU/Linux vs. BSD (vs. OpenSolaris?) and maybe comparing distros).
I'm sure that Novell can share some experiences, too.
