Is there a 64-bit x86-64 Solaris that runs on AMD64 machines? AFAIR
the Sun Fire is such a machine...

Should work - but with SLES you get a longer lifetime (7 years instead
of 2), maintenance, certifications etc. If you don't need those, you
can try 10.0,
