nVidia+Matrox=...well ...fun(ts ;)

O.K. I'm back.
First of all I wanna thank all the people (that is... Anders, James and
...myself) who gave me some nice feedback, when I started this thread
originally.
For those who didn't follow the thread back then, a quick recap:
Basically I asked for (and got) help in setting up a dualhead system, using
one Matrox (Millenium II) and one nVidia (Leadtek Vanta) card, for two modes
of operation:
1: A 'working' config with both heads, and Xinerama
2: A 'gaming' config with just the nVidia card and single head
I now have this working. After finally realizing what kept changing the
symlink in /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 back to libmesa (this was due to a setting in
rc.config) I really only have one real 'problem' left:
Sometimes (I haven't been able to discern any real pattern) kdm decides to
use microscopically small fonts... It happens once in a while, starting at
the login-screen. If I *do* log in, fonts stay tiny for the duration of the
session, and then revert to normal, if not on logout, then usually after I
restart X. As a consequence I've pretty much just restarted X whenever the
login showed the symptom.
I guess I've been 'fortunate' in that I've never really had any trouble with
fonts before, therefore I've never really followed the threads about
those issues, as well as very little (to no) experience in dealing with fonts
in the first place... so if someone could point me in some direction, I'd
appreciate it...
Another problem (related?) has now gone away. Every once in a while,
choosing 'shutdown' from kdm would either just blank the main screen (nVidia)
or even make that monitor lose the signal altogether, leave the secondary
display showing the kdm login screen, while the machine went through a normal
shutdown/power off.
This problem went away after I (in a moment of hellbent daredevilism) decided
that the solution to the problem of having different heights of monitors (one
is a 15", the other 17) would be to rotate the smaller monitor one quarter
turn. Now the thing is (I discovered) that this is a standard feature of the
matrox card, so what I did was simply to copy the dual-head XF86Config to a
new file, and then add an Option "Rotate" "CCW" line at the appropriate
point....
What I don't understand here is that that is the *only* difference between
the two configs... so why would that resolve the
'blank-monitor-during-shutdown' phenomenon...?
In any case, that monitor is probably on the way to blowing up :) It's lost
the red colour already, and since I turned it sideways, it's been making
noises and stuff :D Not like I didn't take it down to the workshop and cut a
hole in what is now the top, to let it get rid of the heat, and everything...
Pretty nice, though... apart from refresh being sloooow, and the missing red,
and... oh well, since I didn't have to get me a dual head card to get this
shit running... maybe I should go get me a nice 17" instead...
Oh btw: Where do I start reading, to make runlevel 4 an option from the kdm
login menu?
TIA
