Thanks for replying Mike and sorry for the delay in responding. Yes, I tried 
that and what Lubos instructed. (kcontrol ->peripherals -> storage media)
VLC will open after setting it up like that but I get a message that 
states "vlc is unable to open the MRL media:/dev/sr0" "check your logs" Don't 
know where that log might be though.

Also tried Mplayer. Set up OK but it dies with no messages.

XMMS set up perfectly for the audio CD. Don't know what to think right now. 
Guess I'll have to keep trying.
