Just upgraded as well, same problem. I was lucky having had it all after an
earlier upgrade, so here is the solution:

Start "qtconfig", once for each user using KDE and if your /etc/X11/qtrc 
has
been replaced also for root (e.g. use "sux" to change user with X export;
root sets /etc/X11/qtrc which is used for KDM). In this program, first
delete any paths of an earlier QT version (here I was using 3.0.4, with KDE
3.0.3 comes 3.0.5) from Library Paths and add (if not already present) at
least the following (adjust to your needs):
/usr/lib/qt-3.0.5/plugins
/opt/kde3/lib/kde3/plugins

and for users their dirs, in my case:
/home/jens/.kde/lib/kde3/plugins/

Adjust the other settings in Appearance and Fonts to your needs, then 
File >
Save. Now the other themes should be available as well; if you like adjust
once again and finally File > Save. Now you can leave whatever window
manager and both KDM and KDE itself should display JPEGs again. :-)
