i usually append -snapshot or -beta or -unstable to the package name.
see
runit vs runit-unstable in home:darix
dovecot vs dovecot-snapshot in server:mail
or lighttpd vs lighttpd-snapshot in ruby.
i usually use the classification from upstream for it.
