[opensuse-kde] Hangouts, XMPP and KDE on-line accounts
Hi, I wonder which options do we have for instant messaging (KDE, TW). I'd prefer KDE application. I need Google Hangouts (more accounts on custom domains), I can live without calling. If the application would work for XMPP/Jabber, the better. If also for IRC, the best. On-line accounts in KDE control center allow me to add Google account and it can access Drive and YouTube. Nothing more. Using gdrive:/ in Dolphin lists accounts, but accessing them fails with "unknown error". Well, no Hangouts available here. Do I miss some required package? KDE on-line accounts allow me to add Google, ownCloud or Twitter. Nothing else. I looked at https://en.opensuse.org/KDE_Telepathy but telepathy-kde doesn't exist anymore (https://software.opensuse.org/search doesn't find it). Wasn't Telepathy responsible for the chatting part of KDE on-line accounts? Do we have anything working based on Telepathy (Empathy?)? I tried Kopete. It doesn't seem to be very maintained either (in KDE3 and 4 it used to be my favorite chatting application) and since the antispam module is missing, bots are very annoying there. Hangouts doesn't work there and the application is frequently crashing (when editing account settings, removing contacts, etc). Is it worth of reporting? I tried Pidgin, but Hangouts didn't work for me and its privacy/antispam settings doesn't work very well. Finally I tried YakYak https://github.com/yakyak/yakyak It seems to be working well, but it can use only one Google Hangouts account (I need two) and nothing else. So do we have among our packages anything reliably working with Google Hangouts? I don't prefer to use it through web browser as I use KMail (so no webmail) and generally rather desktop clients. Full integration into KDE would also be nice, but I need at least anything working... I installed it from Your repository, but on the very first screen after startup it requires some extra account. Is it some sort of Franz account? There is not much information on the screen. Does it require such app account to access anything else? This is weird. -- Vojtěch Zeisek Komunita openSUSE GNU/Linuxu Community of the openSUSE GNU/Linux https://www.opensuse.org/ https://trapa.cz/

Hm, I don't see reason to sign to some account to use other accounts. It doesn't make sense for desktop application. On their web I see only "Franz 5 *offers* built in service synchronization. Just sign in to your Franz account and you are ready to go." I don't really see the requirement...? Personally I'm not too keen on maintaining something that's close to abandoned. Of course other team members disagree with that.

Do you mean you can't use gdrive from Dolphin? I tried it a while ago and it "seemed" to work (I don't host anything important there).

Probably. YakYak writes on the web that it is masking itself as iOS client, using Hangouts API. I'm not sure what does this mean in practice, thought... -- Vojtěch Zeisek Komunita openSUSE GNU/Linuxu Community of the openSUSE GNU/Linux https://www.opensuse.org/ https://trapa.cz/

Sorry, I can't.
IIANM, we currently don't have a pattern ("telepathy-kde") to install it though, you'd need to pick the the ktp-* packages manually.
There is https://software.opensuse.org/package/patterns-openSUSE-kde_telepathy but only in home projects.
Well, actually we never had a *pattern* anyway, but we had a meta-package "telepathy-kde" in the past, that was empty and only required some other packages. Not much difference in principle (a pattern actually just is a meta-package that requires/recommends other things), except that it wouldn't show up in the "Patterns" view in YaST. We should reinstate that I suppose. JFYI, that meta-package pulled in these packages: Requires: ktp-accounts-kcm Requires: ktp-approver Requires: ktp-auth-handler Requires: ktp-common-internals Requires: ktp-contact-list Requires: ktp-contact-runner Requires: ktp-desktop-applets Requires: ktp-filetransfer-handler Requires: ktp-icons Requires: ktp-kded-module Requires: ktp-send-file Requires: ktp-text-ui Requires: mjpegtools Requires: telepathy-gabble Requires: telepathy-mission-control I'm not sure if all of these are really required though.
That is mentioned at that page btw, it refers to a forum post of mine: https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/531751-help-get-telepathy-kde-i ns tant-messaging-applet?p=2870744#post2870744
I was confused by inability to find the packages, so I thought the situation has changed...
Since that forum post, nothing has changed yet. Kind Regards, Wolfgang -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org
