Hi One of the recent updates turned all KDE/GUI task-bar widgets to undistinguishable black an white icons, luckily the functionality is unchanged. Example: I have Dolpin, Terminal, Firefox, and Write there, they look all the same. Does anybody else have the same "feature"? in answering a question, i investigated Regional-Settings:format -> I changed to spanish (OP had done this by right clicking the clock) now about half of my destop is in spanish ie. the launcher, yast etc. for example clicking on RS:spell checker (corrector ortographico) many of the sub items are still in english looking at other settings: yast still claims english, RS:language still claims english. [opensuse-factory] Tumbleweed/X in VirtualBox

I have installed openSUSE-Tumbleweed-DVD-x86_64-Snapshot20170128-Media.iso into VirtualBox. Although the guest additions seems to have been installed, I cannot get X to start. I have all configured as I do for all other openSUSE releases that I run in VB where X starts okay. The host is the same for all VMs. It is only the Tumbleweed client that acts differently. Networking, shared folders and all work fine. It is only X that fails. I see that there is a difference in the X log between the working and non-working (Tumbleweed client) situation. You just see: welcome to grub. And then it is over, no selection, no boot. Just black screen. I guess I will have to fix with a reinstall (or does anybody have an alternative solution?). Hi! Since December 16th Akonadi and (at least) kmail for many users are close to unuseable due to bugs in the akonadi ecosystem, e.g. see here: https:// bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=374734 . I'd like to suggest to go back to the last stable version of KDE Applications, which probably was 16.08.*. I'd really like get rid of this (16.12.*) akonadi version and we can't expect a patch soon, because if patching were easy, six weeks would have been enough to patch it. Then I've had a look into the bug list of kdepim here: https://mail.kde.org/pipermail/kdepim-bugs/2017-January/thread.html This is plainly alarming. So I had a look at earlier months' bug list, which didn't appear to have been much better. So much traffic about bugs for an basic application of the whole KDE system! To me it seems obvious that the development is in trouble and the monthly updates may any time break a working system. I can't and I won't blame anybody for the state of KDE. But from my point of view as a mere user, who'd like to have a more or less working computer, the poor condition of KDE Applications isn't compatible to a rolling release. So I'd like to suggest to change the way Tumbleweed provides KDE updates: Let's only have an update to a matured version, like KDE Applications 16.08.3 was and hopefully 16.12.3 or later will be. Same for KDE Plasma and KDE Frameworks. Sorry for my blunt words. If you, the community of openSuse, judge differently, no problem. I simply can go and install e.g. Leap. But I hope to be able to communicate my argument clearly, without offending someone: You can't call a distro a rolling release, while bugs render the email system close to unusable, for many users and many weeks. Hello, Some of you may have noticed some submit requests for packages that BuildRequire: boost-devel. As of current Boost (1.63.0), the boost-devel subpackage has been split into individual libboost-*-devel subpackages. The reason for the split up is to reduce the giant dependency tree that Boost pulls in because of boost-devel. As an example. libboost_graph-devel is only required by 1 package in Factory and libboost_graph_parallel-devel is not required by anything. The latter pulls in the entire OpenMPI stack, and and this happened for every single build of anything that used any part of Boost! Splitting this up allows us to greatly reduce this dependency tree in shipped products. For now, boost-devel continues to exist in Factory, but please avoid using it in new packages. So, what are the few new packages? libboost_headers-devel libboost_atomic-devel libboost_chrono-devel libboost_container-devel libboost_context-devel libboost_coroutine-devel libboost_date_time-devel libboost_fiber-devel libboost_filesystem-devel libboost_graph-devel libboost_iostreams-devel libboost_locale-devel libboost_log-devel libboost_math-devel libboost_graph_parallel-devel libboost_mpi-devel libboost_program_options-devel libboost_python-py2_7-devel libboost_python-py3-devel libboost_random-devel libboost_regex-devel libboost_serialization-devel libboost_signals-devel libboost_system-devel libboost_test-devel libboost_thread-devel libboost_timer-devel libboost_type_erasure-devel libboost_wave-devel Quite a lot of software is only using header-only boost libraries, which means libboost_headers-devel is enough to get it to build. Currently I'm working through the list of about 200 packages that BuildRequire: boost-devel and changing these to an appropriate subset of these new subpackages. If your package BuildRequires: boost-devel and it's in Factory, I'll probably get to it in the next 24h and provide you with a submit request. Additionally, Boost package now provides full support for Python 3 as well as Python 2.7. This includes newly packaged Boost::MPI bindings for both python versions. Ohh, there are more than that one. I remember, that I also commented on one of these: no graphical input, instead textmode input is shown. The question is, whether these are indeed related... [opensuse-factory] systemd 232 makes problems on updated systems

hi all, i have a tumbleweed x86_64 system which was installed years ago as 13.1. after installation i upgraded to every new opensuse release. i never did a new/fresh install. and this approach worked very well. then i upgraded/changed to tumbleweed. also without big problems. now systemd 232 is available for tumbleweed. i updated and then systemd-journald.service and other didn't work any more. downgrading back to systemd 228 made it work again. then i made a diff from 232 version of /usr/lib/systemd/system/systemd-journald.service with the version from 228. and there are 4 lines which are only in the 232 version: MemoryDenyWriteExecute=yes RestrictRealtime=yes RestrictAddressFamilies=AF_UNIX AF_NETLINK SystemCallFilter=~@clock @cpu-emulation @debug @keyring @module @mount @obsolete @raw-io i found all the service files in /etc/systemd /usr/lib/systemd which use these new properties and commented them out in all service files. and then, everything again works like expected. on another notebook, i freshly installed tumbleweed, of course with systemd 232 from the beginning. and this system didn't have any problems with it. so, WHY does the upgraded/updated system has problems with these new systemd properties??? does anybody know anything about this? -- Best Regards | Freundliche Grüße | Cordialement | Cordiali Saluti | *DI Rainer Klier* Research & Development, DevOps Namirial GmbH -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe(a)opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner(a)opensuse.org

[opensuse-factory] rpmlint warning for no dependencies needed

Hi, I found a package that had been converted from wxWidgets-2.8 which needed manual requires, to wxWidgets3 which works with rpm automatic find requires and the manual requires macro failed but the package still built with an empty requires. see: openSUSE:Leap:42.2 wxhexeditor. IMHO there should at least be an rpmlint warning for a binary package that builds with no requires, this is possibly the cause of https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1022460 . I wonder if there are anymore packages out there that also have this problem, does anyone know how to search for them? I'd consider adding it as an update, too, to 42.1 and SP1, at least in aux repositories - preferably to updates :-). I've spoken with the author of pam_faillock and I believe it to be superior to pam_tally2, particularly concerning handling of screensaver handling. pam_faillock is part of the recommended RHEL configuration for secured computers and holding out for pam_tally2 also presents a nasty non-uniformity for nearly the same functionality (although, weaker). I've asked the author, Tomas Mraz, to make the patch available standalone - which he has provided here: http://people.redhat.com/tmraz/pam_faillock/ I would've have submitted my branch against factory pam incorporating the patch - but unfortunately I seem to be having some automake/libtool issues in the build that I cannot figure out - so I'm going to have to leave that effort to someone who knows those build tools better than I. Hi all, I was about to submit GitKraken to the devel:tools project where I thought it would fit best - until I saw the mess of licenses this has. I'm unsure of how the licensing (there are a multitude of licenses used due to the number of libraries used) would affect openSUSE. [opensuse-factory] -debug RPMs for Tumbleweed

Have many -debug RPMs for Tumbleweed gone missing? For example: http://download.opensuse.org/tumbleweed/repo/oss/suse/x86_64/ I build some Tumbleweed packages on OBS and I get the expected -debug RPMs. But the main Tumbleweed repos seem not to have these. This is especially true for libraries. I ran gdb, and it suggested a zypper command line to get the -debug packages. That failed (except for my own OBS packages). Hi, yesterday I came across go, wanting to update syzkaller (written in go). But I failed miserably. The packages are over year old, the build go macros seems to be broken etc. See build status in OBS: https://goo.gl/4gQDCB On the top of that, there are pending updates to several packages for 7 *months* already: https://build.opensuse.org/user/show/MargueriteSu Does anybody care? Should we drop all this golang mess from openSUSE and rely on "go get"? [opensuse-factory] ANNOUNCE: transactional updates for Tumbleweed

Hello, I would like to announce a new package in Tumbleweed: "transactional-update". What is this, and why is this from interest for you? Tumbleweed is a rolling release distribution. Which means, even intrusive changes will be applied to a running system, which is in use by the user. For a lot of updates this is no problem, but sometimes there are updates, which make trouble. Only remember the email from Martin Wilk from Jan 16th, 2017: "CAREFUL: New Tumbleweed snapshot 20170112 released!". Or think about the pam-config update last year. For another project I wrote a script updating a distribution in a transactional way. I was asked by many people if I couldn't provide that for Tumbleweed, too. So, here it is. What are transactional updates? A transactioan update: - is atomic - The update does not influence your running system. - It's either successful applied or nothing is changed. So no broken RPMs are flying around in the system. - can be rolled back - if the upgrade fails or if the update is not compatible, you can quickly restore the situation as it was before the upgrade. What do you need to be able to use it? - A recent installation of Tumbleweed (updating from older versions, especially installations made with openSUSE 13.x, will not work) with btrfs and snapshots enabled. If your installation is not recent enough, the script will tell and warn you and refuse to work. How does it work? In short, we create a snapshot of the system, update this snapshot, do a "rollback" (or better "somersault") to this new snapshot and with the next reboot, the updates are there. And if they don't work, boot the old snapshot and continue to work, until the problem is fixed with another update. So, everything is fine? No, it is not. The original project did work with a read-only root filesystem. Which means, after taking the snapshot, the original data couldn't be modified and no data could go lost. With Tumbleweed, all changes you are doing to the root filesystem subvolume after starting the script will be lost with the next reboot into the new snapshot. Which means, after running the script, you should immeaditly reboot to activate the changes and avoid data lossage. Modifications in other subvolumes are fine. Another problem is: we are using snapshots and rollback, so face the same issues as with snapshots and rollback. I have run this script now for three month on a default Tumbleweed installation by cron without any problems. But there are RPMs, which will create problems, and which needs to be adjusted. 1. strictly seperate code from user data. /srv is a real nightmare. Either user data will go lost, or the application will not be updated or rolled back. 2. Don't modify data in post install sections, but during boot or first start instead. If the data is in a subvolume, this one will not be accessible during the upgrade. Or the update wouldn't be atomic anymore. 3. Don't create something outside the snapshot subvolume, this will not survive the next reboot. 4. RPM, which installs directories or data into directories, which are subvolumes, needs to be adjusted. This will not work. Example: /var/cache is an own subvolume. Quite some RPMs create directories and data there, and some of them will stop working if you remove this directories. That's bad even without transactional updates, a system administrator should always be allowed to delete the cache. A better way is to create the directories during boot with tmpfiles.d(5). Same problem for all other subvolumes like /var/log, /var/spool, etc. So, now you can test the script and I hope it is from use for many of you. I'm pretty sure there are still situations which the script cannot handle, and a lot of you have ideas about how to improve it. I'm happy about every patch or idea. And of course adjusted RPMs, which have no problem with this update method.
