Can this be true? If so, why? Zypper won't let me upgrade acpid without breakage unless systemd is installed too. Hello. Recently updated my Factory running workstation (x86_64, Xfce). Monospace font interval is increased badly. I'm sure, I use DejaVu Sans Mono as a monospace font. I choose 'monospace 9' in programs settings. Hi List Mates, Just a very early warning with regards to the latest released systemd version (version 210). In the release notes the following two items will have an effect on people that are utilizing laptops with a docking station and an external monitor. * logind is now a lot more aggressive when suspending the machine due to a closed laptop lid. Instead of acting only on the lid close action it will continuously watch the lid status and act on it. This is useful for laptops where the power button is on the outside of the chassis so that it can be reached without opening the lid (such as the Lenovo Yoga). On those machines logind will now immediately re-suspend the machine if the power button has been accidentally pressed while the laptop was suspended and in a backpack or similar. * logind will now watch SW_DOCK switches and inhibit reaction to the lid switch if it is pressed. This means that logind will not suspend the machine anymore if the lid is closed and the systemd is docked, if the laptop supports SW_DOCK notifications via the input layer. Note that ACPI docking stations do not generate this currently. Also note that this logic is usually not fully sufficient and Desktop Environments should take a lid switch inhibitor lock when an external display is connected, as systemd will not watch this on its own. The first item concerns a change that systemd is monitoring if the lid is closed or not. This monitoring starts already during the system boot process which would lead to the effect that the system is forced into suspend mode even before the login manager is reached. To prevent this, the second item was implemented, however as indicated current kernels (including the latest 3.14- rc4) do not support this yet for all laptops. The issue however is that the system will not reach the Desktop Environment yet as that this new principle already kicks in during the boot process. So implementing a lid switch inhibitor in GNOME/KDE/etc does not make any sense as that the system will never reach the desktop environment. I had a couple of email conversations with Lennart about this topic yesterday and finally with my last message he got the real issue that this happens during system boot and therefore systemd should handle this properly. He indicated that he will resolve the issue in one of the upcoming versions of systemd and also probably move the external monitor detection out of the DEs into logind. (The situation will then be that if the lid is closed and an external monitor is connected, then systemd will not suspend the system). If the decision is taken by the systemd maintainers, then in my opinion it would be good to revert the two commits in systemd version 210 that implement the two items mentioned so that the old lid switch behavior is restored. [opensuse-factory] New Package - libhal1-flash (re-enabling Flash-Player DRM content on Linux)

Good afternoon! I've written and packaged a compatibility library for flash to enable playback of DRM content (this removes the dependency on the HAL package). I'd like to know what steps I can take to have the package considered for inclusion in openSUSE 12.3 and 13.1. Can I submit the package to devel:openSUSE:Factory, or is there another action I should be taking? Three noteworthy points: - package naming (libhal1-flash) doesn't 100% align with the Shared Library Policy (I've suffixed -flash to make clear this is not a fully functional HAL layer and also to avoid naming conflicts as some distros seem to have a shared library package already named libhal1). - The packages depends on dbus and udisks. It seems to work find when udisks is launched on demand (as for openSUSE 12.3) - The flash-player package could have some kind of RPM dependency on this package to assist the user when looking in YaST (Install / Remove Software) / Package Manager. [opensuse-factory] libav and multimedia idea

Hello guys, I have created proof of concept libav library with disabled patented codecs in my home project [1]. This means that this library si up par with what we have in chromium and it should be legal to distribute. Apart from the library the repo contains vlc chromium and xbmc (built localy fails on obs, meh) which seems to run fine, just not to play almost anything ^_^. The possibility here is to include all the media players and stuff around it into openSUSE release, where one has to flip the switch in libav (see the spec file) and can build full-fledged-european-edition which can play our sweet movies. Hello, I just did a fresh installation of factory. Network manager in KDE displays an error, but networking seems to work fine. $SUBJECT is "wow" because I don't recall openSUSE booting ever so fast! What was changed? I did not check with a timer, but it seems to be faster now than other distros, while earlier openSUSE was among the slow starters. Just rebooted (it had been 60 days since last reboot), and it picked up the new tcpd/libwrap0 files from 13.1 (am pretty sure it's not fixed in factory, given it hasn't been fixed in over 2 years)... Hi, Releases going forward, or, how do we release without full time paid worker bees? With all the discussion toward the end of last year I suppose that today's e-mail "Timeline and roadmap V2" [1] finally shed light on the inevitable conclusion, the openSUSE team (@SUSE) will spend more time on other stuff and less time, if any, on turning the release crank. This is the team's prerogative just like everyone is free to work on the project, or not, in areas of interest to them. We can argue whether the way this is coming about is giving the project the best chance to succeed or whether the transition is being put worth in a nice and friendly way, but I think we should not go down that path. Thanks! to the openSUSE Team for the hard work they have put forth in the past to turning the release crank, it is much appreciated. I think the time has come to move forward and deal with the new situation. As of right now we still have a release cycle of 8 month. That would put us into May for openSUSE 13.2. This brings about two questions: - Given the current situation can we meet a May release date? - Do we skip the May release and move to a yearly cycle and release 13.2 in November of 2014? During last year's discussions there were a number of people favoring a yearly release cycle. We have to make a decision, - stick to 8 month or move to 12 month? Voice your opinion but stick to the point and please be concise. For simplicity lets just assume that there will be no full time paid help to turn the release crank and that the work is all on those that are not part of the openSUSE Team. Under any circumstances I'd say our first go around will be a bit rough around the edges and that's OK, we have to learn. What do I have to offer? After all stuff will not get done by me sending an e-mail into the world. I offer to take on part of the role of "Release Manager". I will not be able to do all of it and I have a new definition for the role (see below.) Stephan did way more and was always the tireless worker that brought everything together. No one that does not work on openSUSE full time can obviously fulfill that role, thus we have to split things up. I figure there are about 60 to 70 hours worth of work per week that we have to distribute. I'll define "Release Manager" as: The person or group that runs after people, keeps an eye on the schedule and tries to herd the cats to get the stuff fixed that is broken. I am willing to take part of that role, and with this mail hopefully be a rallying point to put openSUSE releases on a bit more of a solid footing than where we are today, after [1]. If we go this route it implies that everyone that has stuff in Factory, what will become the next release, nothing there changes, has more responsibility in helping out than they do today. We no longer have people that can fix everything and get to spend all their time on the distribution and integration of stuff. Every maintainer has more responsibility. So where do we go from here? Do we bootstrap an effort to get a release out the door without openSUSE @SUSE or do we drift along in the uncertainty of "maybe we know something in August"? I am happy to be a rallying point and fulfill part of the role of "Release Manager" as outlined above. Maintainers/Packagers be heard, speak up, but lets not drift into rat holes, the situation is actually quite simple. I'd like to add this package to factory. It's been in Apache:Modules and used in production for several years now. apache2-mod_authn_otp mod_authn_otp is an Apache web server module for two-factor authentication using one-time passwords (OTP) generated via the HOTP/OATH algorithm defined in RFC 4226. This creates a simple way to protect a web site with one-time passwords, using any RFC 4226-compliant hardware or software token device. mod_authn_otp supports both event and time based one-time passwords. It also supports "lingering" which allows the repeated re-use of a previously used one-time password up to a configurable maximum linger time. This allows one-time passwords to be used directly in HTTP authentication without forcing the user to enter a new one-time password for every page load. mod_authn_otp supports both basic and digest authentication, and will auto-synchronize with the user's token within a configurable maximum offset (auto-synchronization is not supported with digest authentication). mod_authn_otp is especially useful for setting up protected web sites that require more security than simple username/password authentication yet also don't require users to install special VPN software, and is compatible with software tokens that run on cell phones. Hi there, I got a few bluetooth speakers that behave very well but not when the source is my laptop. I'm inclined to think there is either a power management issue or a degradation? of the bluetooth signal after several minutes (10-15). for which I need to go into the Control Panel, disable Bluetooth, set it back on and off it goes well. While misbehaving, the audio is cutting off and is pretty behind to my play/pause actions. Is there some performance tuning that could be done to fix this? Broadcom Corp. Hi list, please take a look on these two packages located in home:pgajdos. (Non)changes ============ 1. SUSE specific configuration is there exclusively provided by fonts-config package. 2. Default configuration and configuration options is somewhat based on infinality-fontconfig ideas (some points are not though): a. Families with good instructions (based on infinality database) are grouped together in 10-group-tt-hinted-fonts.conf. b. For this group, autohinter defaults to off, for other families is autohinter on. This is most significant change to previous default configuration, where autohinter was turned on only for enumerated families. c. Hinting default remains same, hintfull (=on) for BCI, hintslight for autohinter. d. Antialias remains of course on by default. e. lcdfilter is set to lcdnone, rgba is set to none. This is subject to change if we will find an agreement, but keep in mind that this configuration depends for example on display rotation and, to my knowledge, can't be changed in majority of running applications. f. When ms fonts are not installed, default families are DejaVu Sans, Liberation Serif and Liberation Mono, which is recommended by infinality. g. 10-rendering-options.conf contains possible modifications of the above default, for example (i) force autohinter for all fonts (to my testing only, can produce more thick glyphs, but some glyphs can be more blurred) (ii) force nonsmoothed black and white rendering (without antialias). Default sans font then changes to Liberation Sans, which gives quite readable results for latin, cyrillic and greek. I have not elaborated for other scripts so far, help is appreciated. (iii) infinality-like option to force black and white rendering for good hinted monospaced fonts (e. g. Liberation Mono) (iv) more, like embedded bitmap, lcdfilter, rgba, hinstyle setup. 3. 10-rendering-options.conf is generated from template though; it is created depending on new sysconfig variables in /etc/sysconfig/fonts-conf. In this sysconfig, you can even choose prefered sans, serif and monospaced families. (All is prepared to create a yast module :).) Statistics ========== See the attachment created as diff of fontinfo output. There are many changes with signature '-bci -3 +autohint +1' which basically means 'use autohinter with hintslight(1) instead of native hinter with hintful(3)'. This is related to 2.b. and expected. Hello guys, Seems there are few collisions when I updated my factory box after 2 weeks: File /etc/ImageMagick-6/delegates.xml from install of libMagickCore-6_Q16-1-6.8.8.1-2.1.x86_64(openSUSE-Factory-Oss) conflicts with file from package libMagickCore-6_Q8-1-6.8.6.9-3.1.x86_64(@System) File /usr/lib64/mpi.so from install of libboost_mpi1_54_0-1.54.0-4.1.x86_64(openSUSE-Factory-Oss) conflicts with file from package libboost_mpi1_53_0-1.53.0-6.2.x86_64(@System) I guess there should be confilcts/obsoletes on the new packages to the old ones so we allow proper rolling. [opensuse-factory] Warning: Issues with latest libzypp

I should have know better than update libzypp during the weekend. Weekend updates don't have a good reputation as that most of the time things are breaking, which seems also the case with the libzypp update. Starting now YaST software manager, directly gives me a whole bunch of packages that are going to be installed. And I didn'*t even selected anything. Packages like Texlive, apparmor, britty, libreoffice. Even after removing all the patterns-openSUSE packages, this big selection keeps on coming back. So don't update libzypp/zypper or be very careful when running an update through YaST. It seems that running just zypper functions as expected. Dear Listmates, With this email, I would like to indicate that the openSUSE KDE Community team has the intention to send a delete request for the package qutim in openSUSE:Factory. Qutim will still be available in KDE:Extra, however only for the combination openSUSE 13.1 and KDE 4.12 or lower combinations. The main reason is that the package seems to have been abandoned upstream as that the last change was about 2.5 years ago. For those that do not know the package, qutIM is a free and open-source multiprotocol (ICQ, Jabber, Mail.Ru, IRC, VKontakte) instant messenger for Windows, Linux, MacOS X, OS/2, Symbian, Maemo/MeeGo, Solaris and *BSD. Hi All, I know this is a strange request for the Mailinglist to discuss the technical development of our distribution, but hopefully the logic for reaching out to the technical experts who live here will be obvious The Design Team @SUSE are putting together an openSUSE Flyer with a Cheat Sheet of useful/important commands for anyone using openSUSE via the CLI They kindly provided a 'prototype' version of the sheet at FOSDEM, and it was a huge success, but it's obvious the list of commands was a little out of date (it was based on an old sheet) The first 'official' version of this sheet is likely to be circulation for at least a few years, so I want to make sure it's accurate and relevant for at least 13.1 but ideally also aligned with how we're likely to go in 13.2 Please go to the sheet on my ownCloud instance and edit the document https://sysrich.co.uk/owncloud/public.php?service=documents&t=d619d6b00b118… Feel free to remove commands that are obsolete, or add new ones that are the 'right' way of doing things. After only a week or so of being maintainer of this package I feel I have to relinquish maintainer-ship of this package. The reasons for this are that after reworking the entire package this weekend and bringing it in-sync with upstream development and as i got ready to submit said changes. I found that some of you found it necessary to submit and approve your own patches without even as much as a heads up. This creates unnecessary extra work and apparently being the maintainer of a package does'nt mean much. If any of you would like to take over Plymouth please let me know. All, I proposed making some KVM related packaging changes. Motivation: Certain aspects of KVM support have changed over time, and we should adjust to better align to the current state of affairs. Among these are: - the KVM modules have been included with the base kernel for quite some time - there is no longer a qemu / qemu-kvm code split upstream qemu handles KVM completely - on x86, since v3.7 the KVM kernel modules are auto loaded based on detection of the required hardware virtualization features Our current kvm package originally included the KVM kernel modules, as well as the QEMU binaries which supported KVM acceleration. As noted above conditions have changed to where a kvm package has little of its original purpose. The qemu package now has the basic support for using KVM, and about the only meaningful use of a kvm package would be for KVM related configuration or deliverables which would not be appropriate (for whatever reason) in the qemu package. The current content of the kvm package in OBS Virtualization includes: - dependency on qemu package - a recommends for virt-utils - the legacy qemu-kvm executable, which is simply a wrapper for the QEMU provided executable with the parameter added that enables KVM acceleration. I believe this wrapper still provides the useful feature of having an executable name, compatible with prior kvm enabled usage. - man page for qemu-kvm (which maps to qemu) - a udev rule to change permissions and group ownership of /dev/kvm to be compatible with current libvirt usage as well as non-libvirt based (ie QEMU command line) kvm group administration. - a qemu-ifup script which I find useful for testing and creating simple usage scenarios - a kvm_stat tool which allows for monitoring of the lower level KVM module activities of the running KVM guests - in the case of the SLES version of the kvm package, a place for additional modprobing, and support documentation, which in effect, rounds out the complete base support for KVM. I propose that we rename (essentially) the kvm package to be qemu-kvm. This is partly to reduce the number of maintained packages, as I envision this simply being a subpackage of qemu. This will also make versioning simpler to maintain. This package will maintain a dependency on qemu. I propose that the permissions and group ownership udev rule be moved from qemu-kvm to the base qemu package so that libvirt and etc. can function without the qemu-kvm package, providing for a slightly smaller package set and simpler configuration. I propose that the recommends dependency for virt-utils be removed. If the additional features and documentation still remaining in qemu-kvm (the qemu-kvm wrapper and man page, the sample qemu-ifup script, the kvm_stat debug utility, possible scripts for modprobing of additional kernel modules which enhance qemu-kvm usage (eg vhost-net), and the support documentation) are desired, then that package may be installed, but it is not considered essential for basic KVM support. The virt-utils package currently provides little value. It was envisioned as a place to collect generic utilities useful for either KVM or Xen virtualization, but to date very little has been done there. QEMU based utilities are now in qemu-tools, and the only utility in virt-utils is the unmaintained vm-snapshot-disk. I propose that we eliminate this package, but if there is objection, and someone relies on the vm-snapshot-disk feature, we can keep it, but not have it be part of the default set of rpms installed by KVM Host Server pattern. If there are dependencies on the kvm package name which will take time to remove, we could have that stripped down package simply require qemu-kvm in the interim. Hi, during the weekend I was at RedHat DevConf and I had a lightning talk about openQA there. Afterwards, I spoke with various guys and found out, that they are working on their testing solutions as well, although not focused on GUI apps as openQA is. General feedback from them was that they like it and they'll take a look at it again at some point and why does it have to be in perl (I guess there are people that don't like this language for some reason) :-D One of the solutions they have already is Igor (more info bellow). It injects the service to run the tests and uses PXE to boot testing machines. Therefor it is not limited to virtual machines, but can do real hardware as well. It also has a support for libvirt. Dear all, There's an idea growing in my mind that was spawned by latest announcement from The Team and I'd like to share it with you. I'm just a user, and a novice to the oSS mailinglists at that so please excuse my ignorance on the subject. To start with full disclosure/background first: I'm a TW user and the reason I moved to it is specifically because I've read somewhere GKH is the maintainer. The only time I've used SuSE before that was in 2005, when oSS wasn't. Anyway, to the point: Since The Team expressed wish to move to improving the backbone and the goal of having functional factory, wouldn't it be a sensible idea introduce a monthly freeze? Have a frozen-factory where the packages wouldn't be updated for a month to allow bugfixing for the next month when the new refresh would be done. That is where TW would come in. Have a rolling distro that _is_ frozen-factory and is used by users and developers _and_ has the stability potential. Obviously here the new structure would need to be made and this is something you (oSS team) wants anyway. I'd like to contribute in any way possible to extent of my abilities. I'd really like to hear what you gentlemen have to say on the topic since I personally have no experience to the inner workings here but would _really_ like oSS to thrive. The quality as is is something that many strive for in the Linux community but few posses and oSS is one of them. So, the subject says it all. I've been testing a huge database on 13.1 RC1, well actually factory, with a btrfs partition (not the system partition, just a dedicated partition), and under heavy write it chokes the system much more than ext4 does. It also seems to have lower thoughput on what should be mostly parallel sequential access (ie: multiple sequential threads), but I'll have to perform more accurate benchmarks to be sure. It may be an fsync issue. Last year I had an issue when my system having been upgraded to 12.3 was becoming unusable due to deadlock in reiserfs quota routines within 5 minutes after boot. As I had been working with automake-1.14 before on Cygwin, I can't say I noticed real obvious breakages. Hi all, I have read the current news on the openSUSE team and the plans to step back from the development. In general, I don't see a big problem here, but one thing really makes me a bit anxious: As Coolo is also part of the team, is it even possible to release a new version of openSUSE without him? From what I know for now, nobody except Coolo knows all the stuff that is necessary for releng. One option I could see is to setup a Release Team with members from the Community and maybe someone from SUSE and do a hackweek together with Coolo to instruct the team. So Coolo, if you read this, do you thing that could be an option? Would you offer your help to hand over the tasks to such a team? Greets Marcus

Hi, since SPICE is totally non-spicy without the guest agent, I'd like to get spice-vdagent into Factory. It's the thing that makes linux guests in KVM behave similar like Windows guests or linux guests inside Virtualbox: resize the window and the guest resizes, too. It is said to also make copy'n'paste work, but I could not get this going for me. I'm looking for the right devel project. "Virtualization" is obviously unmaintained and thus I'm opting for Base:System (simply because I can accept my SR there by myself). Hi, For years the whole patterns story was a very sad one. It was under-documented, in a strange format, spread over several strange files, generated by crude scripts, .... And this has changed now with a rather bold move in https://build.opensuse.org/request/show/220699 All scripts are gone - patterns-openSUSE is just yet another package and the solver will see what packages in the repository provides pattern(). This has several consequences: - patterns are tracked in OBS and no longer in github - I'll need to spend quite some time to redo the package list tracking for Lives and DVDs, but I'll gladly work on that ;) - we can actually split the patterns-openSUSE package into logical groups The last one is very important - it means we can e.g. have patterns-openSUSE-kde.spec in K:D:F and patterns-openSUSE-gnome.spec in G:F without the teams having to go through me to update their desktops. All that matters in the end is that their packages provide "pattern() = <DESKTOP>". Hi all, As you know we had a week-long meeting in Nuremberg. Quite a few of the things we've been working on (openQA, OBS workflow etc) were shared by now. Besides discussing features, we scheduled our work. In the previous thread on $SUBJECT, Simon noted that going for a release in November seemed a far smarter compromise between the benefits of releasing and getting some improvements in our tool chain than skipping a release. Most of the team agreed on this right away and we'd like to go for that. However. This does not mean the initial idea of doing a more 'relaxed' release is off the table. Planning software development is hard, planning experimentation (like the staging projects we are toying with) is impossible so we can not predict when we will be done. This means that we still intend to take those of you who stepped forward to help out with the release up on their offer. The exact nature of what we release is still to be determined and we'd like to make a more final decision on how much effort we can and will put in in August. So far it is sure that we would need some volunteer to keep eye on Factory and release milestones at least till then. So, for now, this will be a 'community release'. This might mean less QA but also no security updates provided by SUSE! Especially if it comes to the latter case we should communicate this carefully to our users as it will be more like a slightly more stabilized milestone than a successor to openSUSE 13.1. How to call it, how to communicate and what exactly it will look like - August. When exactly we will be fully back to working on Factory, releasing milestones, and working on the release we will hopefully be able to determine in August as well. Thoughts? Hi, openSUSE has a packing policy of requiring rc* symlinks for each init script. So for e.g. /etc/init.d/foo there must be a symlink /usb/sbin/rcfoo -> /etc/init.d/foo. There is an rpmlint check for this policy (suse-missing-rclink). Now that more and more packages correctly switch to systemd only and drop the init scripts the rpmlint check doesn't work anymore. So we are slowly losing a nice convenience feature of openSUSE. Techically the feature works also for systemd units by making the rc symlinks point to /usr/sbin/service. When in involked as e.g. "rcfoo start" this script would then run "systemctl start foo.service". Personally I'd like to see us keeping the rc* feature also in the future so I'd like to propose introducing an rpmlint check to complain about missing rc* symlinks also for systemd unit files. Any objections on that? It has already been quite some time that I did anything with the two packages and I found myself lucky that some other people made some updates and fixes to it.
