[opensuse-factory] custom openSUSE-NET-x86_64.iso with different install= URL

The openSUSE-Net.iso images at http://download.opensuse.org/factory/iso/ do unfortunately point to a non-existant installation source, instead to http://download.opensuse.org/factory/repo/oss/ To make things easier for me I want to roll my own with just the REPO_URL changed. How can I link/branch this "thing", with just the REPO_URL changed? It seems that the "Branch package" link in the web UI in https://build.opensuse.org/package/show?package=_product%3AopenSUSE-cd-mini… does not work. Appearently its not an ordinary package. In Gkrellm I monitor the teperatures and fan speeds on a regular base, due to the high daily temperatures. Up to 12.2 I was able to have the system and CPU temperature and all three temps from the harddisks. Two fan speeds were also shown. Due to an acpi driver problem I have to add "acpi_enforce_resources=lax" in the bootsequence. Worked like a charm. In 12.3 though the CPU, system temp and fans are not shown any more. And when I remove "acpi_enforce_resources=lax" from the boot sequence also my harddisk temperatures vanish. According to the sensors-detect my temp chip is a Winbond A83697HF/F/HG on the ISA bus at 0x290. What has changed since 12.2 that causes the noshow and is there a solution? Is my problem Suse specific or should I ask de Gkrellm people? Even in perl, if you do a: "use 5.14.0;" That only give you an assurance that you are running, at least, under 5.14.0 OR higher. It's not limited to 5.14.0. Even perl does not restrict programs to a fixed version. But Suse added exact version requirements to vim and and other programs making it impossible to upgrade piecemeal. It's one thing to say you must have *at least* this version, but requiring *exact* versions is Bad software practice. It is as bad or worse than hard-coding absolute pathnames. Many programs under the 12.X series now have exact dependencies on GLIB x.14, x.15, x.16... etc... (12.1/12.2/factory), which means binaries from one version are BOTH forwards and backwards incompatible. That's a violation of basic software design and support that is unthinkable. It would be like all software vendors 'failing' to load if MS updates any library. That is a worse case of DLL hell that what MS had. MS's DLL hell happened because they only allowed 1 version of a shared library **in memory** at the same time. If an old piece of software loaded an old version of some library, then a newer piece of software wouldn't load because it needed a newer version of the library that couldn't be loaded. They fixed this in Vista, about 8-9 years ago. In the suse version of DLL hell, they only allow 1 version of a library to be loaded onto a machine at all (as rpm will uninstall old versions). AND -- software doesn't have requirements for a "MINIMUM" version, but an exact version -- meaning that newer versions of the library can't be used to support old versions. Generally speaking libraries are **usually** backwards compatible and this type of requirement is unnecessary. When there is a large interface change, you end up with a major re-release of the library -- like libreadline5 + libreadline6 -- both of which can be used and required at the same time. This is what I meant earlier by suse creating damage much faster than I can even documented it, let alone fix. That's even assuming I wasn't argued to death about why standard software practices were no longer reasonable or desirable... which isn't the case with many developers who feel bad SW design should be justified rather than fixed. More than one person has said, we don't care what you want -- this what we are doing and this is what is going to be, deal with it. That type of attitude indicates they don't care about users or anyone other than themselves. Subject says it all -- install gvim, then update perl to a newer version -- watch gvim fail. It shouldn't. This is a growing problem in the 12.x timeframe. Products are becoming more fragile and more easily broken. A related issue is allowing multiple versions of packages to be loaded to support the increasing number of packages that hard-code in fixed numeric values in the build-code rather than using a symbol resolved at run-time. Example -- make gvim dependent on 'perl', then it runs no matter what the version. Sorry Ken, but you got this totally wrong! It is not cups which is supplying the print job as PDF, it is the application. If the application provides PS, cups uses that. If cups receives PDF, cups 1.5 *has to* convert it to PS, as it is the "native" format of cups 1.5. Perhaps someone can explain to me why Windows doesn't need a pre-boot ramdisk in order to boot, while Linux does? I know Windows doesn't have all the drivers for all the hardware linked in with it's kernel -- it's dynamically loaded out of it's "/bin (windows/sytem32)" dir. So why does the linux kernel have this extra complication while windows does not? It's a bit embarrassing, I would think to see the wide range of HW supported by Windows **without** a special 'initrd' for drivers, while linux still doesn't support the range of HW that Windows does (some, but not ALL of that being due to short-sited HW providers who can't provide open specs or drivers). So what is Windows doing 'right', that Linux is unable to do? Hello List Tumbleweed __________ -after using YAST to verify my printer HP PSC 1510 Series , the YAST test Print is OK However, when i try to print from LibreOffice, Gimp, Okular the result is either a blank page with nothing on it , or occasionally a poor quality not satisfactory print - this is puzzling because the Yast Test Print for Cups is Good. mate-keyring controls the locks on the keyrings in suspend/hibernation; currently the package is broken and upstream might give libsecret as optional. What would be the best pick for openSUSE? maintaining the current packages or jump to libsecret when it becomes available ? [opensuse-factory] build time verification of GPG signatures

Hi. As discussed in past[1], Factory now has gpg-offline package, which is a wrapper on top of gnupg, which allows simple build time offline verification of GPG signatures. It makes possible to verify tarballs in the build time. The use of gpg-offline in spec files is really simple: https://build.opensuse.org/package/view_file?expand=1&file=gpg-offline.PACK… The package also contains a man page. The first time step is very security-sensitive: You define your package keyring - a list of trusted keys, that can be used by the upstream to sign the source of your package. Check carefully that you are not adding a malicious keys there. Be paranoid! The gpg_verify tool is able to detect hacked source on the upstream servers (and such bad thing really already happened[2]!), but it is not able to detect maliciously uploaded false signature on the key servers. If the upstream author is in your web of trust, you are on a safe side. But if he/she is not in your web of trust, you have to use alternative ways to trust the key: - If you can mail to the author and verify the key, it is very probably an authorized signature. - If the signing key is the same as the one used a year ago, it is probably an authorized signature. - If the signing key was used in mailing list many times to sign developer mails, or at least it was announced there, it is probably an authorized signature. - If you can find the public key or footprint on more servers on different hostings, it is probably an authorized signature. I just implemented signature verification for all packages, that already contained signature and/or trusted keyring. But I did not verify, that signature submitted by packagers is the signature of the real author. Feedback, feature requests and bug reports are welcome. My previous SR was stuck for almost two weeks before I re-submitted an SR with the conditional dependecies removed. Can someone please unblock SR 144031 and move it on to the next review stage? Finishing this SR is the final step to have a working Haskell compiler (ghc) in Factory. Hi all, on my system I had a small problem on upgrading. System is 64-bit. The installed libgtk-3-0-32bit-3.6.2-3.4.x86_64 needs libatk-bridge-2_0-0-32bit-2.6.2-3.1.x86_64 which in turn needs libatspi.0-2.6.2-3.1 - which not exist and I think never existed - at least not in Gnome 3.4. I had to ignore that and everything else works fine so far. Hello, I wanted to know what algorithm snapper uses for snapshot comparison? From what I have interpreted from the code, it first compares metadata and then does a block by block compare using 'memcmp'. I also wanted to know how the directories are 'diff'ed and if there is a scope of improvement in the current implementation. Also, if anyone has taken it up yet. Hi all, can somebody explain why java-1_6_0-openjdk-1.6.0 been removed from the OBS for OS_12.2? It is still there for OS_11.4, OS_12,1 and even sles11_sp2. (repo/Java:/openjdk6:/) Reason for asking is a comment from a developper: "All distros still have OpenJDK 6, but offer OpenJDK 7 as well. So you have to select the right packages. Dear people, The Release Team has expressed concerns regarding MATE inclusion in Factory being the most important of them the lack of co-maintainers to ensure proper maintenance in 12.3 and beyond. I'm available to swap help (project level, not single package) with anyone who might be interest; in practice, you cover my back in MATE in case I need help (imagine I'll be away for 2 months due to anything extraordinary), and I'll cover your's. Any of the XFCE/LXDE maintainers is interested in co-maintaining my stuff, and I co-maintain with you yours? I would rather avoid KDE, but I'm also up to that. I really would like to see MATE's future secured in openSUSE. If this fails, the only possibility I have to get Fedora maintainers covering my back (as I'm also co-maintainer of MATE in Fedora). Hi, on my machine, kwin reliably crashes upon logout. It looks exactly like https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=252817, but the workaround given in comment 181 does not resolve the problem (and it should not be needed anyway, since UnredirectFullscreen=false has been the default for some time). Anyone else seeing this? Also, (this might or might not be related), when the screen stays locked overnight, the locking window will not disappear upon unlocking -- it is no longer functional, and clicks seem to go right through, but it is still very visible. People, Hibernation is utterly broken in MATE; I don't really believe it's a MATE only issue, so I would like to attempt to debug this issue and see if there's improvements that can be done.
