[opensuse-factory] Suggestions for minor improvements in GNOME for 12.1

Hi! I have just been playing around with GNOME in 12.1 Beta and found 3.2 excellent. I have a few openSUSE specific suggestions that I think we could think about and discuss (with relevant bug information wherever applicable):- 1. Please enable showing the date by default in the gnome-shell clock This is bug 722218. I don't know if this goes radically against the design principles of the upstream devs, but I think it makes me uncomfortable to see that users would have to turn to a terminal command to change the present default, which is to only show the weekday and not the date. this could be done by means of a gnome-shell-branding package, for example. 2. There are a number of applications (X Kill, X Refresh, etc) which do not have icons, and which were not there in openSUSE 11.4's application list. Is showing these in the overview intentional (these were also absent from 11.4 + GNOME 3.0)? Bug 722217. 3. There is this package [1] that enables searching from the applications overview for packages in software.opensuse.org. It would be useful probably, to have this installed by default as it adds some (distro-specific) value and makes searching for not installed packages easier. It would also help if this, rather than the present default (Wikipedia) be made the default search engine in the overview. This is bug 722219. 4. I think it would also be great to have the application gnome-documents installed by default and listed as one of the favourite items on the dash. It is not on the Beta. 5. The alt-status-menu extension: this probably goes strongly against the upstream wishes to have by default, but I have found it generally useful because, not to speak of its other advantages, it finally gives me one way to manually hibernate my system. There is simply no other way to trigger this from the GNOME 3.2 desktop. So could we consider also having this by default or would that be really bad? 6. We have not yet found a way to integrate YaST control center into the desktop. We discussed three ways that this could be done earlier [2], and we should probably settle on the easiest of them to implement. 7. Time dependent wallpaper. We had this by default on 11.4, it would be great to have something simlar based on the 12.1 branding. This can of course be done a bit later into the cycle. I hope it is not too late to discuss these and work on them. I would love to help with several of these, and most of them are only minor tweaks, but I am stuck with little to no internet till the 18th of this month at least and I am worried that then it would really be too late. [opensuse-factory] Tumbleweed current status with KDE

As a number of people are already asking me, yes, I know about the KDE problems in Tumbleweed right now. There have been massive build issues with KDE in Tumbleweed for the past few weeks, and finally everything just failed to build, so if you update, you will get downgraded to the 11.4 version. Because of this, I've now removed all KDE packages from Tumbleweed, and will work on the 4.7 update. When that finishes building then you will get upgraded to it, but it will not happen until next week sometime at the earliest. Hello. This is a very strange and funny issue. I lost underscores typing text. The first screenshot is my XChat window with nicks Lazy_Kent and Russian_Vodka. In the left side and in the dialog window no underscores. Hi! Afterupdating to 11.4 I noticed regular beeps from the speaker especially after computer is switched on. Now I found the cause: the kernel reports "No human readable MCE decoding support on this CPU". How can I combat it? I have Intel Core2 Duo. I have a package with Requires(Pre): %install_info_prereq It fails on Factory with: error: line 22: Bad Requireflags: qualifiers: Requires(Pre): info But builds on 10.0 to 11.4 Google gets me similar but not quite current things like: http://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/devel/2011-January/148182.html Known? Do I change my spec or do I just wait for Factory's rpm or obs to change some more and it should resume building on it's own? Hello, Just now, making a zypper dup (on factory, of course), I notice that the display is curious. As soon as the download begin, the terminal display is erased one line at a time, like if there where some backspace at the end of each report line, until reaching the top of the display where every line stay I don't know how to explian better. Hello Folks, So, just offering my opinion on what I personally feel is an "issue" for OpenSUSE with regards to its firewall. Currently, SuSEFirewall2 invokes ip(6)tables each time it needs to add a rule - this goes completely against what is advocated by the Netfilter developers as it is not atomic and is costly in terms of performance; iptables-restore on the other hand, is atomic and restores everything in one fell swoop. Additionally, whilst SuSEFirewall2 does provide for allowing you to configure your own rules, it's not particularly robust, nor supported. Thus, my suggestion is as follows: Modify SuSEFirewall2 so that rule building happens *once* and from that point, ip(6)tables-save and ip(6)tables-restore is all that gets used. SuSEFirewall2 need only do a rebuild if the rules are modified. Doing it this way carries the benefit that initialisation of Netfilter at bootup will be far more efficient. It also has the benefit that any advanced user is free to customise their iptables ruleset as they see fit, currently, the only other way I have found to do that is dragging across iptables scripts from Enterprise Linux and disabling SuSEFirewall2. [opensuse-factory] 12.1 beta, apparmor not installed automatically

Hi, I installed 12.1 beta x86_64 with KDE in kvm as a fresh install I basically used the default settings. I noticed the following: - no apparmor package was installed is it not longer used in 12.1? - the "kickoff" application starter misses the "go back" arrow on the left side of menus containing subentries. e.g. (I use german language setting) "Anwendungen"->"Internet"->"Webbrowser" In 11.4 when you navigate to "Internet" or "Webbrowser" you have a bar along the left edge of the menu with a triangle pointing to the left which allows to navigate back to the previous menu level. In 12.1 beta this bar is missing. To navigate back I so far found only the links on top of the menu under the search bar. BTW: in my "Internet" menu the "Nachrichtenbetrachter" (akregator) entry is duplicated. In general: 12.1 beta looks very good and feels fast even in the VM. [opensuse-factory] Grub not installed correctly in 12.1 beta installation

I've tried installing 12.1 beta on a USB hard drive twice now. Both times I've disabled installing grub on MBR and enabled install on the /boot partition. In previous releases, including 11.4 and 12.1 factory M5 this worked, however it does not - grub is never installed to the USB hard drive. I had to manually install it with "root (hd2,0)", "setup (hd2)" at the grub command line (note that it's hd2 not hd1 because the USB stick I used for installation is seen as hd1). Has anyone seen this before? Should I file a bug report? [opensuse-factory] Intel Z68 onboard graphics adapter: monitor at DVI-D port not detected

Hi all, I've got the following problem on my system: Asus P8Z68-V, Core i5-2500K Kernel 3.1.0.rc7, Xorg 7.6 (on both 11.4 resp. 12.1 beta installation) Dualhead (1x VGA, 1xDVI-D) at onboard graphics adapter ports Whilst booting the openSUSE 12.1 beta KDE Live CD, all works perfect out of the box. Both monitors gets detected and I can configure them with RandR. Whilst booting a 11.4 KDE system with Xorg upgraded from http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/XOrg/openSUSE_11.4 and kernel from http://download.opensuse.org/factory/repo/oss/ (in fact the same kernel as in 12.1 beta) the monitor connected to the DVI port doesn't got detected. This behaviour is same with other kernel versions too (tried with 3.0.4, 3.1.rc6 and 3.1.rc9 from Kernel:HEAD and 3.1.rc6 from Factory) The syslog gets flooded with -------------------------------------------------------------- [drm] GMBUS timed out, falling back to bit banging on pin 7 [i915 gmbus dpd] i915 GPIOF: SDA stuck high! -------------------------------------------------------------- I tried to compare all relevant log and config files between my 11.4 installation and the 12.1 beta live system and couldn't find the difference which leads to that problem. - /proc/config.gz is the same - syslog differs only at the error message, all other relevant lines looks similar - Xorg.0.log is the same, up to the section where the monitor EDID data is logged. Hello, in the OBS project "Printing" there is now CUPS version 1.5.0 for various openSUSE and SLE versions. It may take a few hours until RPMs appear under http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Printing/ For openSUSE:Factory there is submitrequest 86888 pending to upgrade CUPS in openSUSE:Factory to version 1.5.0. See https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=722057 for background information. Basically: According to http://www.cups.org/roadmap.php CUPS 1.4.x is no longer maintained by upstream which is the reason to upgrade to version 1.5.0. Backward incompatible changes: * The main header cups/cups.h no longer includes the PPD header cups/ppd.h which may require code changes to applications. * CUPS no longer supports the old ~/.cupsrc or ~/.lpoptions files from CUPS 1.1.x. The ~/.cups/client.conf and ~/.cups/lpoptions files that were introduced in CUPS 1.2 must now be used. * The scheduler now requires that filters and backends have group write permissions disabled (security). This means: Compiling software which use the CUPS PPD API but do not explicitly include the <cups/ppd.h> header file would fail. This backward-incompatible change should show up during package build in OBS so that affected packages can be fixed. In old-style applications which still use ~/.cupsrc and ~/.lpoptions user default settings would no longer work. I have no idea how many such old-style applications may exits. Printer driver packages which install their own filters and backends with group write permissions would no longer work. I will check those packages in OBS. For third party printer drivers from manufacturers I cannot do anything (they may no longer work without manual adjustment). I appreciate any testing and feedback regarding CUPS 1.5.0. The problem seems to originate at domaintools' whois service. All, I just submitted a new leaf package, sleuthkit, to factory. If it is accepted, it is a classic computer forensic tool that has many users. It is still maintained and gets regular updates. Hello, I have some troubles using lilo with the kernel kernel-default-3.1.rc7-3.1 that comes with 12.1 beta1. I run into the error: Fatal: Setup length exceeds 31 maximum; kernel setup will overwrite boot loader. When I increase verbose level to maximum I got information that it has 33 sectors, so is bigger then maximum. Hi, In the past we used the default.jpg links for our default wallpapers, but as neither KDE nor GNOME use these anymore I removed the clutter created by these files (GNOME respected the Hidden=true, but KDE didn't). Sascha, the compiler/linker (written in C) etc seem unaffected so I'm wondering if stripping the go binaries was (re)enabled in that package revision? Anyhow, the release 60 release in devel:languages:go seems fine. Just building a package for yesterdays 60.2 micro release... I've made a couple of tweaks to the package and a minor patch to the linker to allow gdb to use go specific pretty printer and helper functions. Sascha would you please review it when i submitreq it to D:L:Go? I'll start fixing up the other lib packages that need updated against r60. This got me thinking, binaries and libraries built from the gccgo implementation should have native support in gdb, but I don't see a GCC front end for Go, now that we are on GCC 4.6 do we build this at all? [opensuse-factory] UEFI bootable livecd/dvd image ?

Hi, I managed to get opensuse installed (and booting) on my uefi enabled system. However I had to use another livecd distro (namely Ubuntu) to achieve proper grub2 and embedded EFI bootloader configuration. efibootmgr does not work from a non uefi system, and iso from opensuse.org are not able to boot in UEFI mode. This is an issue because it does not allow to make EFI bootloader able to launch GRUB2. An ugly workaround consist in playing with *.efi file in ESP partition to cheat EFI bootloader, but it is not safe. Another one is to boot ubuntu in UEFI mode to use efibootmgr. Would it be possible to make iso able to boot in UEFI mode, to remove the need to use some third party tool to add an entry to the EFI bootloader ? Hi, Since I just got 3 people reporting the issue on IRC, let me warn everyone here: GNOME is broken in Factory right now. It's because of the telepathy-glib version we have in Factory has a bad bug. A new telepathy-glib is on its way to Factory (already in G:F, although G:F is not published yet). Avoid libtelepathy-glib0 0.15.6; try to stay with the old version (should work, untested) or get the 0.15.7 version (fixes the issue). I have tried to install the beta version. Unfortunately all I get after the installer copied all the files and tried to reboot: Starting YaSt2 error: can't create transaction lock on /var/lib/rpm/.rpm.lock (No such file or directory). Therefore installation does not finish and the system does not work at all... I can run the system in an Emergency System, but I'm not able to install grub correctly. The system should be installed at /dev/sda5. I've just had a go of installing the 12.1 beta from the KDE Live CD version using a USB stick. The hardware is an Acer Aspire 1551 netbook and I'm installing on to a USB hard drive so as not to disturb the 11.4 installation and Windows on the netbook's hard drive. Here are my questions/problems encountered: 1) I selected English UK at the first install screen. At the installation summary screen I clicked 'Languages' to add German as a secondary language. I was surprised to find that English (US) was already selected as a secondary language and that English (UK) doesn't appear in Secondary Languages, only in the Primary Language selection drop-down. From memory both of these are different to the 11.4 installer and I think a bit inconsistent. 2) The firewall and ssh settings no longer appear in the installation summary screen, is this intentional? 3) Last but definitely not least the system didn't reboot after the initial installation. I selected disable boot of MBR and enable boot from /boot in the Installation Summary screen. It got through all the package installation and prompted me to remove the 'Live CD' (actually USB stick) and reboot, but nothing, no grub menu. The netbook boots fine off the USB stick and of course off the 11.4 install on its hard drive. I mounted the USB hard drive that contains the 12.1 beta install on another machine and all the partitions are there, including what I expect to see in /boot. Today I did several test installations using the DVD ISO and KDE Live CD (x86_64), both on my desktop system as well as on my laptop. The most striking problem is that after booting the KDE Live CD (using the ISO image from CD and from a USB stick) there is no icon on the Desktop to click to install openSUSE 12.1 Beta 1. I consider this a showstopper. It is all due to the fact that a container with a Folder View of the folder Desktop is missing on the screen, which is in a bug report. Still a number of less important problems, for which there are bug reports, are present. One of these is that on the laptop it is possible to configure wireless, but after configuration (NetworkManager with SSID, WPA/PSK, passphrase) the network does not work during the network test. Only after finishing the installation, with some difficulty, a reboot is needed, one can configure the wireless interface in the networkmanager-applet. I also tried to boot the DVD image from a USB stick (16 GB). It did boot, but it did hang when configuring udev, so before YaST became active. -- fr.gr. [opensuse-factory] Update frequency of the openSUSE:Factory snapshot repo

In the past the snapshot repo was created (AFAIK) to reduce the number of rebuilds triggered by changes in the Factory/standard repo. However this is no longer the case. The snapshot repo seems to be updated as soon as that the Factory/standard repo is being published and this causes an big number of rebuilds. Of course this is the way that things should work, but I wonder if it is really necessary to have the snapshot repo updated at least once a day (if not twice a day). This is causing that repo's that are building against it to be triggered for a full rebuild again and bigger repo's will just keep on building and building, without ever really coming to the point to be published. My question now is if we can lower the frequency of updating the snapshot repo (and give somewhat more peace to OBS) or is there a way to setup a repository to ignore those snapshot updates ? Hi, opensuse 11.4 is getting to be a few cmake versions behind (2.8.3) and my workarounds are growing for modules that have fixes upstream. How about updating what's in, at least, tumbleweed? I'd be glad if it got put into 11.4 updates but tumbleweed is a great start. I found a build laying around in the tools:building repository but yet another repository is undesirable, especially since I maintain alot of build machines at my workplace. Thoughts? Hi, Currently this package doesn't build for ARM as of broken code for the xgi driver. I wonder if it would be an idea to slit the package up into different rpm packages, for each driver one rpm package. Basically the same was MeeGo does. The advantage is that it'll safe space. What is important for ARM. I think that chance that an ARM system will be connected to a XGI card is next to nothing. So this driver doesn't need to be maintained for ARM, I think. As I remember from long ago it was stored in /etc/modprobe.conf (which always worked). Now it seems that what ever is the storage place of this info is not being written by YAST2>Hardware>TV card correctly. Hey Group; Why would the sound come and go after a reboot where the sound worked with TVtime? Amarok does work but it is a Line Input and therefore not PCM. [opensuse-factory] openSUSE 12.1 Beta 1 KDE4 install - problems and observations

Running into a few hiccups with a vanilla 12.1 Beta 1 KDE4 install. Thought maybe it'd be worth mentioning them here (sorry, it's a long email, but it's basically a step by step log of what I encountered during my test installs). Install was done on an Asus EEE 1005HA netbook using full DVD ISO written to USB stick (using SuSE Studio Imagewriter). Writing the ISO to the USB stick was easy/smooth. Initial boot worked OK, but then the install errors out requiring several additional steps in a text console to make the install continue. The error message is: - Make sure that CD number 1 is in your drive. To work around this, I had to select (in text mode): - Back > English > English (US) > Start Installation > Start Installation or Update > Hard Disk > (select USB stick), type a / in the text edit field and press Enter. After following these steps, the install switched back to GUI mode and continued normally. I installed 3 times, and it happened each time. This is something that would be very confusing to a user who has not encountered this before. After the install completed, I bumbled into several problems/issues: 1. Apps are not always removed from the taskbar See: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=275469 and https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=278891 2. Extra/duplicate launchers for Firefox and Dolphin are shown on the taskbar. You can remove them, but on logout/login, they are added back. The extra lanuchers have smaller icons than the "standard" launchers. See; https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=720240 3. KNetwork manager not working as expected. The following point are the steps I followed to get WiFi working: a. Network icon (with no connection) is a tiny dot that is almost impossible to see. See screen shot at: http://www.digitaldragon.ca/WiFi_icon.png b. Click KNetworkManager > WLAN Interface and nothing happens. I had to always click twice (not double-click, two distinct clicks) to open the WLAN Interface. c. Initial WiFi setup - selected my WiFi router, and did a normal setup. Did not use KWallet, just clicked through to use "unsafe" storage. Connection fails with a Cannot Connect error. Shows a key over the signal strength icon in the taskbar. d. Click Manage Connections, and the password request window is opened behind all other open windows. Brought it forward, and entered root password. Errors out with: "No agents were available for this request". Click OK and the Edit Network Connections window opens. e. Wireless Security password field is blank. I entered the WiFi password, made sure thatConnect Automatically is selected, and it connects. f. After reboot, a Secrets for (WiFi name) - KDE Daemon window opens asking for my WiFi password. I enter the WiFi password, and check the WiFi connection. The WiFi password field is blank again. I fill it in for the 3rd time, and save. After reboot again, the WiFi password is now saved and things work correctly. 4. Reboot fails/locks on the first install I did, requiring a hard restart. Console error message is: NetworkManager[742]: <warn> disconnected by the system bus NetworkManager[742]:<warn> quit request recieved, terminating... NetworkManager[742]: dbus_g_proxy_call_no_reply: assertion '!DBUS_G_PROXY_DESTROYED (proxy)' failed At this point the reboot stops, and nothing happens until a hard restart. This was not duplicated on a second clean install. 5. On reboot, I sometimes see a PolicyKit1-KDE segfault error. This is intermittent, and I haven't seen a pattern to it yet. 6. Icon for Documents (in Dolphin) is missing. 7. Flash videos (YouTube for example) do not work on initial install. The Plugin Finder fails to find a suitable plugin. Pluuin Flashplayer is installed, but is not triggering. I had to install Flash manually from the default Factory repos. The default Flash version that is installed is the old 10.3 one instead of the new 11.0.r1.129 (current RC1). Are there plans to provide the 11.0 player? 8. On initial startup of the Software Manager, it tries to connect to the DVD. This has to be manually disabled - shouldn't this be disabled by default? Or am I the only one who doesn't leave the install media in the drive (or in my case, plugged into the USB port) after the install is complete? ---------- Some observations.... The tap-to-click and right-hand touchpad scroll are now disabled by default. They can be enabled in the KDE config settings. This new default behavior is not what users are expecting in my testing - tested with users who are not familiar with Linux or KDE. They all expected tap-to-click and constantly tapped the touchpad when they wanted a left-mouse-click. Not all tried to right-hand side scroll... some did 2 finger scroll as is default in Windows 7 (and now apparently KDE4 as well). The default behavior of the KDE4 desktop is confusing to new users. Dragging a file to the desktop, the user is presented with a menu of choices - the choices are dependent on the file contents. Most choices are widget related. These files are not dropped into the Desktop directory - they are converted to widgets... this is not intuitive since you end up with some files in the /home/$USER/Desktop directory, and some on the Desktop... but neither one contains the same files. I can see this causing some interesting and annoying support issues until people are used to this somewhat unintuitive and backwards behavior. Contents of the Desktop directory are not shown on the KDE desktop (in default configuration). If I add a Folder View widget to the desktop and configure to show the contents of the Desktop directory, then the contents of the Desktop are displayed. Again, this is confusing to new users who expect that the Desktop directory contents are actually shown on the Desktop. The new artwork for 12.1 is very nice. It's clean and very professional looking - a MASSIVE improvement over the 11.4 artwork. Connecting to Samba shares (eg my NAS drive) was relatively simple - just typing smb://<IP Address> worked without any drama or pain. KDE4 performance is snappy and fast even on the relatively modest hardware of the EEE netbook - it's even able to manage the default Desktop Effects without any noticeable slowdown. All features for the netbook are working (sound, WiFi, NIC, video, Function keys etc) right from install - which is a LOT more than I can say for a clean install of Windows 7 (where most things don't work from initial install). [opensuse-factory] Thunderbird problems with 12.1 Beta

Hello all! I installed openSUSE 12.1 Beta 1 in a virtual machine (VirtualBox) on my workstation. After the finished installation and configuration, I started my machine in full-screen mode and opened a new terminal. I switched to root and did the following: zypper install thunderbird after this, zypper should install Mozilla Thunderbird 7.0, but it broke up with a error. I haven´t the error here (I´m back to 11.4 to write this e-mail. no internet connection under 12.1 :-( ) Has anyone else such a problem? Or could you please test it on your 12.1 machines? If you got the same, I will file a bugreport. Hi, gtk2-devel package does not pull "shared-mime-info" (more specificaly it should be pulled by gdk-pixbuf-devel) required by gdk-pixbuf-devel or specifically gdk-pixbuf-csource command from same package GDK uses mime-info for controlling which "loader" will be used for loading images and if package is missing it will fail to call correct shared library, as can not determine given image type. Installing shared-mime-info is enough to make loaders work as expected but should be fixed on higger level.
